Notice / Nav.

Grads: This page compiles (a) links to Classics sites that I find myself visiting frequently and (b) sites that provide useful information about computing tools that classicists may want to use. Under each category I have attempted to arrange items in order of the frequency with which I seem to use them. I hope this page will be an evolving record of things that grads want to know about; please do let me know if there is anything else you would like to see here.

Proxy

Many of the resources that you will want to use must be accessed from within the Duke domain (these and other things that cost money are marked "$"). To use these services you will have to either (a) use a computer at Duke or (b) configure another computer to use a Duke proxy server. The latter is easy; follow these simple instructions. If you are going to be sending secure information (rather than just looking up some Greek, for example) you might want to set up a Virtual Private Network.

Greek Fonts

Greekkeys ($): Kadmos, Athenian

I use the Greekkeys family of Greek fonts because (1) I think they look nice, (2) many journals seem to use one of them, (3) Athenian is available for free, which facilitates sharing of data, (4) Athenian and SymbolAthenian are based on the same font, so that one can write Greek and Greek numbers in an aesthetically uniform fashion. To download the free Athenian font go to Perseus or to GreekKeys (seems to be more reliable). GreekKeys is no longer produced for Windows.

More info Maria Pantelia maintains a list of useful information on Greek fonts and software. Useful links, including downloads, also at the TLG font help page.
Unicode Unicode is here. To learn more (you should) see Patrick Rourke's handy intro.
Beta code Beta code (Perseus font help) is a standard way of rendering fully accented Greek in ASCII characters. If you want to send a few words over email and want to minimize potential confusion, Beta is a safe bet. Example: mh=nin a)/eide qea\ *phlhi+a/dew *)axilh=os.

Searchable Greek

TLG / search ($)

"The Thesaurus Linguae Graecae (TLG®) is a research center at the University of California, Irvine. Founded in 1972 the TLG has already collected and digitized most literary texts written in Greek from Homer to the fall of Byzantium in AD 1453. Its goal is to create a comprehensive digital library of Greek literature from antiquity to the present era." [source]. If you are entering from the main page log in as an institution (bar at left); or do it here. Select the font that you want, and you are ready to go.

Perseus (Papyri)

If you are entering from the main site click "Papyri" at top left; this will take you to the TOC of the DDBDP; to search click "About the Papyri collection" at top left.

To search lexically you will have to click the box and include accents and breathing marks. A query "strathgo/s" will find the noun in every case; same applies to verbs. When searching strings a hatch (#) represents the boundary of a word; thus "kai#" will find KAI but not KAISAR-. "kai#tode" will find KAI<space>TODE.

See Perseus' documentation on getting your browser to display Greek. I find that Safari displays Unicode UTF-8 best.

PHI Greek Inscriptions

It is now possible to search the PHI Greek inscriptions online (contains many more texts than PHI 7, which you must access via a desktop utility, e.g. Pandora)!!! Last I checked, the online search did not seem to work with IE, but did (and beautifully) with Safari and Firefox.

Wait for the Java bit to load at the bottom of the window. Logical operators as follows:

  • ^ = OR
  • & = AND (within same text)
  • ~ = NEAR (within ca. 100 characters)
  • ( ) = grouped

Perseus (Classical)

"Perseus is an evolving digital library, engineering interactions through time, space, and language. Our primary goal is to bring a wide range of source materials to as large an audience as possible." [source]. I do not use Perseus for searching classical Greek. Editions are not necessarily the most recent or best.

Searchable Latin

Epigraphische Datenbank Heidelberg

[source]. Contains epigraphic Latin in Année Épigraphique, chunks of CIL, and elsewhere (contents). The advanced search form is likely to be more than you want, but the simple interface will probably be enough.

Epigraphik-Datenbank Clauss-Slaby

[source].

Patrologia Latina ($)

"The Patrologia Latina Database is an electronic version of the first edition of Jacques-Paul Migne's Patrologia Latina, published between 1844 and 1855, and the four volumes of indexes published between 1862 and 1865. The Patrologia Latina comprises the works of the Church Fathers from Tertullian in 200 AD to the death of Pope Innocent III in 1216. The Patrologia Latina Database contains the complete Patrologia Latina, including all prefatory material, original texts, critical apparatus and indexes. Migne's column numbers, essential references for scholars, are also included." [source]. Beware, searches seem to default to complete words; thus "cupidi" will only find "cupidi". To find e.g. "cupiditatem" you must truncate: "cupidi*"

Brepolis: Library of Latin Texts ($) Database of huge body of Latin literary texts. You will need to read the long downloadable manual, as this is not easy to use.
Brepolis: MGH ($) MGH online. You will need to read the long downloadable manual, as this is not easy to use.
Biblioteca Teubneriana ($) Desktop searching only. PC only. The dept. owns a copy--in the dept. libr.
PHI 5 ($) Covers less than the Teubner CD. Desktop searching only. We use Pandora, which is relatively inexpensive and relatively easy to use.
In principio Database of more than 1,000,000 incipits catalogued by the Institut de Recherche et d'Histoire des Textes, Bibliothèque Nationale de France, and the Hill Monastic Manuscript Library. I have only briefly tested it. Seems useful.

Search Software

TLG If you cannot or do not wish to search the TLG on line you have a range of desktop options. With a decent internet connection the on-line search seems to be faster even than a search from disk-mounted copy of the CD-ROM.

PHI Greek Inscriptions (PHI 7) and Latin texts (PHI 5) ($)

If you want to search these you will have to use a desktop utility. In the dept. We use Pandora, which is relatively inexpensive and relatively easy to use.
Diogenes I have not yet begun to use this free and open-source application, but people tell me it is great.

Lexica / Grammars / Dictionaries

LSJ (Perseus) | English words in LSJ

Save money; buy a used supplement and use LSJ for free on line. Searching for English words in LSJ is handy (though I find that I use Yonge more).

Lewis and Short (Perseus) | English words in L&S

Also very handy to have Lewis and Short on line.

[source]. The dictionary itself is not on line, but a bewildering array of useful tools can be found here.

S. C. Woodhouse,
English-Greek Dictionary (Attic)

"The ENGLISH-GREEK LEXICON here presented contains features which, I trust, will render it acceptable both to teachers and to learners. The vocabulary has been compiled from Attic authors of the best period. So little composition is attempted nowadays outside the range of Attic that I have refrained from introducing words and phrases that belong to other dialects. Moreover, the scope of the work within the limits I set myself has attained a magnitude that would render any large increase of vocabulary a burden rather than a help to the student. The writers from whom I have selected my material are, as far as prose is concerned, THUCYDIDES, PLATO, XENOPHON, DEMOSTHENES, and the ORATORS. For verse I depend upon the authority of AESCHYLUS, SOPHOCLES, and EURIPIDES, excluding, however, in each case, the lyrical passages. Comedy is covered by ARISTOPHANES." [source]. Narrow in scope but fast and handy.

Allen and Greenough (Perseus) I still find it faster to use the paper, which exists in an excellent revised edition [amz | abe] . Free PDF download of the 1903 edition from TextKit.
Goodwin, Syntax of the Moods and Tenses (Perseus) I still find it faster to use the paper. Free PDF download from TextKit
Kühner-Gerth II.1 (1898), II.2 (1904); Kühner-Blass I.1 (1890)(Perseus) I still find it faster to use the paper.
OCD via Past Masters If you use the OCD. Not sure this faster than paper.

Bibliography

l'Année Philologique ($)

"Thirty-three years (1969-2001) of the Année philologique (volumes 40 to 71) [now 30 (1959) - 74 (2003)] have now been put on-line by the Société Internationale de Bibliographie Classique, under the direction of Éric Rebillard (CNRS-EHESS), in collaboration with the American Philological Association and the Database of Classical Bibliography." [source]. Beware the coverage is not complete. The search interface is awkward and does not facilitate navigation between records. I find that I get the best results by searching under "Full Text" with boolean "and" (space between words as in google)

TOCS-IN

"TOCS-IN provides the tables of contents of a selection of Classics, Near Eastern Studies, and Religion journals, both in text format and through a Web search program." [source]. Sometimes I catch items here that have not (ever or yet) made it into Année. Search truncates by default: "friend" finds "friendship," "friendly," etc. "friend#" finds "friend."

Gnomon

"Der »Gnomon Online« ist eine Ergänzung der »Gnomon Bibliographischen Datenbank« für das Internet.Die CD für 2005 (ca. 330.000 Titel) ist im Buchhandel erhältlich unter der ISBN 3-406-44289-7. Im Internet stehen alle erfaßten Titel der Erscheinungsjahre 2002 - 2005 zur Verfügung; ein Update des »Gnomon Online« mit Neuerscheinungen findet etwa einmal pro Woche statt." [source]. Catches collections of essays that tend not to be covered in TOCS-IN. Since entries are tagged by key-words (in one language) this engine sometimes turns up things that you might not catch in Année.

Numismatic Literature

"NUMISMATIC LITERATURE is a semiannual survey of current publications in or related to numismatics with abstracts of their contents. Beginning with NL 79 (December 1967), bibliographic information and abstracts have been submitted by an international board of Contributing Editors, each of whom collects material published in his country." [source]. Fulltext searching of many (not all) Num.Lit. volumes. This does not replace systematic searching of the paper volumes, but I have found this to very useful on many occasions.

Bibliographie Papyrologique ($) Not available on line. On the public Macs in the Papyrology Room. Annual bibliography of papyrological research. Updated quarterly. Format is Filemaker; very easy to use.
Leuven Data Base of Ancient Books Catalogue of literary papyri; I find this much easier to use than Mertens-Pack(3). Not strictly a bibliographic DB, but I find I use it most often to discover bibl on known papyri.
Mertens-Pack(3) Catalogue of literary papyri, based on Mertens' update to R. A. Pack, The Greek and Latin Literary Texts from Greco-Roman Egypt (2nd ed. 1965). Not strictly a bibliographic DB, but I find I use it most often to discover bibl on known papyri.
BCS, Bibliography

"la BIBLIOTHECA CLASSICA SELECTA (BCS) se veut une introduction aux études classiques, destinée prioritairement aux étudiants de lettres classiques et d'histoire ancienne, accessoirement à tous ceux qui s'intéressent au monde gréco-romain antique et aux civilisations qui l'entourent." [source]. Introductory bibliography arranged by subject. Sometimes not a bad place to start when you are starting from scratch.

Nomoi Ambitious and very well organized bibliography of Greek law. Arranged in flat files by category so that it is more easily browsed than searched; but to search simply go to the alphabetical list, which gives everything in alphabetical order by author.
[source] Be sure, on the front page to select "mit IP-Zugang."
Nestor "Nestor is an international bibliography of Aegean studies, Homeric society, Indo-European linguistics, and related fields. It is published monthly from September to May (each volume covers one calendar year) by the Department of Classics, University of Cincinnati. An Authors Index accompanies the December issue. Nestor is distributed in 30 countries world-wide. It is currently edited by Carol Hershenson." [source]

Google Book Search

"Just do a search on Google Book Search or on Google.com. When we find a book whose content contains a match for your search terms, we'll link to it in your search results. Click a book title and you'll see, like a card catalog entry, some basic information about the book. You may also see a few snippets of text from the book showing your search term in context. If the publisher or author has given us permission through our Partner Program then you'll see a few full pages from the book and if the book is out of copyright, you'll be able to page through the entire book. In all cases, you'll see links that lead directly to online bookstores where you can buy the book.." [source].

Abbreviations

AJA Abbreviations "The following list of abbreviations of periodicals, series, and books supersedes those previously published in AJA. Although it is unlikely that all archaeological journals--let alone all journals dealing with the ancient world--will ever adopt a universal set of abbreviations, those employed by AJA are generally in common use." [source] Self-explanatory. I use this all the time.

l'Année Philologique ($)

Go to the main page and `Enter' the site. On the navigation bar at top, click `Other Criteria' and select `Periodical' from the drop-down menu. Enter the abbreviation in the search box and hit return. A search for `QC' returns `Quaderni catanesi di studi classici e medievali' as it should.
Checklist of Editions of Greek, Latin and Coptic Papyri, Ostraca and Tablets. "The primary purpose of the Checklist of Greek, Latin, Demotic and Coptic Papyri, Ostraca and Tablets is to provide for scholars and librarians a ready bibliography of all monographic volumes, both current and out-of-print, of Greek, Latin, Demotic and Coptic documentary texts on papyrus, parchment, ostraca or wood tablets." [source]
ANS NumLit abbrev. Do you know the abbreviation CSSAI? Enough said. See above under "Bibliography"
SEG / abbrev. from XXVI-XLV "The list is taken from Supplementum Epigraphicum Graecum. Consolidated Index for Volumes XXXVI-XLV (1986-1995), edited by J.H.M. Strubbe with the assistance of M.J. Bakker (Amsterdam 1999)" [source] Pretty specific, but this has sometimes gotten me out a bind.
LSJ authors  If you abbreviate Greek authors by LSJ this is very handy.
DGE authors and abbrev. The coverage is enormous.
DGE epigraphical abbrev. These are abbreviations used in the Claros database, a concordance of Greek inscriptions (mostly following Année). Abreviations are both listed and searchable. The Claros itself can be very useful, but I have found it difficult to use.
Clauss' Abbreviations Geared toward his DB, but often useful.

I always use the HGV to check dates of documentary papyri. The WL is highly useful inasmuch as it can be (and is) updated more quickly than the DDBDP. Any serious search of the DDBDP should be complemented by a search of the WL.
Advanced Papyrological Information System "APIS links together in a single environment various sources of information about texts written on papyrus and the society that produced them. It contains descriptions of the papyri and other written materials in the collections of the participating institutions, digital images of many of these texts, and connections to databases with the texts themselves in their original languages and with bibliography about the texts. Many of the descriptions include full translations into English. The user can move back and forth among text, translation, bibliography, description, and image. With the specially-developed APIS Search System many different types of complex searches can be carried out." [source]
University of Michigan Papyrus Collection Home Page "The collection comprises about seven thousand catalogued items, many of which consist of two or more pieces of separate content contained in one folder, so that the actual number of papyri which have received or still require individual publication may be estimated at around ten thousand. Of these, some two thousand represent a loan for publication from the Egyptian Department of Antiquities, as will be explained below, most of which have been returned to Cairo. The Michigan Collection, by far the largest in the United States, ranks among the great collections in the world, although it is not as large as those at Oxford, London, Vienna, and, of course Cairo. The importance of the collection is enhanced by the presence of the University's collection of ostraca, which is housed in the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology." [source]
The Tebtunis Papyri Collection "The Tebtunis Papyri consist of the papyrus documents that were found in the winter of 1899/1900 at the site of ancient Tebtunis, Egypt. The expedition to Tebtunis, led by the British archaeologists Bernard Grenfell and Arthur Hunt, was financed for the University of California by Mrs. Phoebe Apperson Hearst. The Tebtunis Papyri are the largest collection of papyrus documents from a single site in the United States. Although the collection has never been counted and inventoried completely, the number of fragments contained in it exceeds 21,000. This web site, which is still under development will provide electronic access to the images of the Tebtunis Papyri as well as textual information."
Numismatics

Head, HN, online

"The Historia Numorum has been converted to HTML and made available free of charge to all. We've tried to preserve the text and layout as they appeared in 1911. Hyperlinks have been placed as suggested by the original text.." [source]. It is great to have a free, full-text version of this invaluable resource online. Greek is unaccented, but the OCR and proofing seem pretty clean. Links out ANS, SNG, and Wildwinds are useful.

BMC online

"The British Museum published most of its massive collection of Greek coins in 29 volumes from 1873-1929. The series, called BMC Greek, is the largest collection of ancient Greek coins ever published. ... This web site is not affiliated with the British Museum, the publishers, or the authors. Many of the volumes are in the public domain. I've reproduced the plates of some volumes here, as an aid to scholars. For Peloponnesus I've added navigation and cross-reference features. I'll be adding similar features to the other volumes as time permits." [source]. By the same person who entered HN.

[source]. I use this site all the time as a source of images for class. Images are available for only a small fraction of the collection, but they are usually of a high quality. Beware that Latin legends often, but so far as I can tell not always, use "V" for "U".

[source]. I find this site very frustrating to navigate, but it contains a great many high-quality images of a wide variety of Greek and Roman coins. Images are also big, which makes them more useful in the classroom than the ANS images.
Virtual Catalog of Roman Coins "[A] Web site devoted to helping students and teachers learn more about ancient Roman coins. These pages contain images and descriptions of coins from the Early Republic through the end of the 4th century A.D. and the formal division of the Roman Empire into east and west." [source]. I sometimes find images useful for class here.

People

Lexicon of Greek Personal Names "The Lexicon of Greek Personal Names (LGPN) was established to collect and publish all ancient Greek personal names. Our material is drawn from all available sources, from the earliest Greek written records to approximately the sixth century A.D." [source]. I find the searches to be worth little; they simply point you to the volume in which you can find the information you want, which does not save much time. The reverse indices and addenda and corrigenda (both under Downloads), by contrast, are useful.
[source]. This is also just a guide to the printed volumes, but a quick search [key words | free text] here often saves time in the stacks (explanations here).

Course Websites

Blackboard I do not use Blackboard, though it does offer all kinds of benefits, including training and support.
Do it yourself

I prefer to make my own course webpages. To do this I had to learn a few very simple things. It takes a bit of time to learn the basics, but not much, and I think it well worth the effort. See A&S OWL and CSILL for more help.

To restrict access to users within the Duke domain: (1) create a directory that you want to restrict, (2) create a file in that directory called ".htaccess", (3) in that file enter the following (exactly):

<Limit GET POST>
order deny,allow
deny from all
allow from .duke.edu
</Limit>

then save that file; or, follow these instructions. Anything that you put in that directory will be accessible only to people in the Duke community (see OIT on remote access)
