Nursing Informatics
Welcome to my portfolio. I created this web site while I was post-graduate student in the Nursing Informatics Program at Duke Univeristy. All this was done, mostly, in the comfort of my living room here in beautiful Seattle, thanks to the wonders of distance learning.
A list of projects I did as student in the NI program are linked on the right side of the page. Some I did individually, some were done as a team project.
What is Nursing Informatics?
The question I get asked the most is "Why did you go back to school?". The next question comes soon after the first. I answer the first "Because I wanted to study nursing informatics". The next question is "Say what?".
Nursing Informatics is a speciaty of nursing that deals with the support of nursing practice with information systems in the delivery, documentation, administration, and evaluation of patient care and prevention of disease. Jobs in this area might include a nurse programmer who modifies programs for use by other nurses, or a nurse who works with others to identify computer system needs, or one who assists in the training and implementation of those systems. They also may work as informatics nurse managers who manage or administer information systems or vendor representatives who work for specific vendors to demonstrate systems to customers.
Thanks to the Duke Nursing Informatics program I am now currently employed at Center for Clinical Excellence at the University of Washington Medical Center. I am the administrator of the online incident reporting system called Patient Safety Net. This is a web based tool that is sponsored by the University Health Consortium. Patient Safety Net (PSN) is a real-time, Web-based reporting tool that can help increase awareness of patient safety concerns throughout the hospital. Its purpose is to increase awareness of safety issues, engage front-line managers in pursuing effective solutions, and advance learning for all participants through sharing issues of concern and innovative strategies. The Duke Nursing Informatics Program has been a great foundation in helping me prepare for this new position.
