Recent Duke Jazz
News
The Duke Jazz Ensemble would like to honor the legendary vibraphonist,
composer, and band leader
Lionel Hampton, who passed away
on Saturday, August 31, 2002.
Throughout his long musical career, Lionel led one of the most
successful bands in jazz history. The Duke Jazz Ensemble extends
particular thanks and gratitude to Lionel for his donation of
$10,000 to the program when Paul Jeffrey founded the Duke Jazz
Series 20 years ago. Lionel was a beautiful musician and person, and
was particularly committed to jazz education.
His legacy lives on through his hundreds of audio recordings,
compositions, and arrangements.
Jeremy Jones, drummer and Duke '02
graduate, was selected from a national applicant pool
as a member of the 2002 Telluride All-Stars. The group performed Aug. 1-4 at the
Telluride Jazz Festival,
which featured artists such as Jon Hendricks and Christian McBride.
On February 27, 2002, Sonny Rollins was named
a winner in the 44th Grammy Awards. He received the
award for Best Jazz Instrumental Album, Individual or Group for his
album This is What I Do. The album was released in October
2000.
On the weekend of October 14, 2000, Professor Paul Jeffrey
was in Italy for the opening of a new jazz school bearing
his name. The school is in Carcare and is under the
direction of vocalist Danila Satragno. This is the third
school in Italy named after Professor Jeffrey.
Sonny
Rollins was awarded an honorary doctorate degree
from Duke University at graduation exercises, spring 1999. His honors include a Guggenheim fellowship and many awards from the music
industry in the United States and France. He made concert appearances at Duke in 1985 and 1996. The Duke Jazz Series is in honor of Sonny Rollins, the greatest living tenor saxophonist in the jazz idiom.
The jazz school of canto in
Cairo Montenotte, Italy, was recently
named for Paul
Jeffrey - "Centro
Musica / Paul Jeffrey." This
voice school is directed by Ms. Danila Satragno, who performed with Jeb
Patton at the 1999 Parent's Weekend Duke Jazz Ensemble concert.
Geoff
Burke, saxophonist and Duke '99
graduate, is working with Harry
Connick Jr. and his big
band. He is playing lead
alto saxophone and doing Finale sequencing
for the band, which will be touring the United
States and Europe.
Jeb Patton,
pianist and Duke '96 graduate, is currently working with the Heath
brothers and can be heard on their
new album, Jazz Family, on the Concord Jazz
label.
Todd
Bashore,
saxophonist and Duke '95 graduate, is performing with the Chico
O'Farrill Orchestra and the Toshiko
Akiyoshi Orchestra, as well as working
as an archivist at Lincoln Center in New York
