Spring 2008 Location Kunming, the capital of southwestern Yunnan Province, is nicknamed the "City of Spring " because of its year-round temperate weather. A city of five million, it is surrounded on three sides by mountains and by Dianchi Lake on the fourth.
Although settlements existed in the area dating back to 279 BC, Kunming itself was founded in the eighth century under the name of Tuodong. In the thirteenth century, the city was renamed Kunming. Kunming's population skyrocketed during World War II, when thousands of refugees flooded the city. This influx included many intellectuals, and during this time, many scientific institutions and universities were founded. Since then, Kunming has been the political, economic, and cultural center of Yunnan Province, one of the most diverse areas in the world.
