For abolishing the free System of English Laws in a neighbouring
Province, establishing therein an Arbitrary government, and enlarging
its Boundaries so as to render it at once an example and fit instrument
for introducing the same absolute rule into these Colonies:
Commentary:
This passage was added to Jefferson's draft in the committee's
revisions, and it was probably meant to serve as an example for
the king's abuses. By giving readers the opportunity to compare
the American situation to another, the king's actions look broader
and less isolated. This adds a great deal of support to the assertions
against the king in the Declaration.
