This passage was added to Jefferson's draft in the committee's revisions, and it was probably meant to serve as an example for the king's abuses. By giving readers the opportunity to compare the American situation to another, the king's actions look broader and less isolated. This adds a great deal of support to the assertions against the king in the Declaration.
