Peter Weiss Links

Peter Weiss is one of Europe's major 20th century artists: an author whose novels rival the masterworks of Joyce, Proust, Musil or Grass; a playwright whose dramas compare with those of Beckett or Artaud; and an experimental painter a nd film maker who fully participated in the avantgarde movements of the postwar period.

In the United States, Weiss has been known primarily for his dramas, particularly Marat/Sade. The English translation of his three volume magnus opus, The Aesthetics of Resistance, will make Weiss's relevance for a rethinki ng of the European past and present accessible to many for the first time.

The organizers of the conference, EUROPEAN MEMORIES, hope to contribute to the re-introduction of this pre-eminent European artist-intellectual into the context of contemporary English-speaking literary-theoretical discourse.
