Subject: SOM/SON Faculty Contributions to Katrina Relief and Rebuilding Efforts
In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, communities in the Gulf Coast region harboring refugees have a need for assistance that likely will continue for weeks or months ahead. At this point, the Department of Health and Human Services is coordinating medical relief on behalf of the affected states (Florida, Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana, and Texas). HHS has received over 30,000 applications from providers of all levels and new applications are not being accepted. However, there are other means of providing support to those so devastated by the hurricane. Faculty members of the Schools of Medicine and Nursing wishing to provide support to the Gulf region are encouraged to do so through donations of personal service, goods or money to established relief organizations such as the American Red Cross, religious affiliations, civic clubs, etc. Temporary leave by faculty for hurricane-relief activities must be approved by the Department Chair (or Dean, in the case of the School of Nursing) to ensure continuity of patient care or academic responsibilities at Duke. Professional liability coverage under Durham Casualty is not extended to individual volunteer efforts undertaken on leave time. Information about service opportunities is available on the volunteer information webpage.
