Duke University Graduate School Enrolls Students Affected by Hurricane Katrina

The Graduate School at Duke has enrolled four Tulane graduate students and two University of New Orleans graduate students. Enrollment of additional graduate students displaced by Hurricane Katrina is anticipated, according to Graduate School officials.

The Graduate School is accommodating students studying for Doctor of Philosophy, Master of Arts, Master of Science, or Master of Public Policy degrees, and who have been displaced by Hurricane Katrina and wish to continue coursework that is relevant to those degree programs while their home institutions are closed.

Eligibility and Enrollment

These students must be enrolled and in good academic standing at the home institution for the Fall semester (or equivalent Quarter) of 2005, meet the admissions requirements of Duke University, and have the endorsement of the Duke departmental or program faculty in their respective disciplines. Students who are eligible will enroll at Duke as visiting non-degree students. Credit for courses taken at Duke will be determined by the home institution. Once the students' home campuses reopen, we expect them to follow the guidance of their home institution as to when it would be appropriate for them to return to their home campuses. Students must return to their home campuses if they have reopened by the beginning of the Spring 2006 semester.

Tuition and Health Coverage

If students are paying tuition at their home institutions, Duke will not charge tuition or registration fees for courses taken during their stay at Duke. We will also waive application fees. We will assist students in finding housing, but they will be responsible for all living expenses. Students must provide documentation of coverage under existing health insurance during the period of time they spend at Duke. Students will be required to pay Duke's health fee for the semester in which they are enrolled at Duke, but all other fees normally required of Duke graduate students will be waived.

Application Process

Please contact Linda Roycroft (919-684-3913, linda.roycroft@duke.edu) for information on application procedures. We ask you to make every effort to undertake the abbreviated application process and come to the Duke campus as quickly as possible.
