DUH Plans Week of Mourning, Consolation and Hope for Victims of Hurricane Katrina and Their Families
To both recognize and respond to the needs of our employees following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, plans are being made for a week of
mourning, consolation and hope. Several Hospital departments are working together, to create a series of programs that will provide opportunities
for the Duke Hospital community to come together, to give voice to the thoughts we are carrying for our friends and relatives on the Gulf Coast.
Events are being scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 6 - Thursday, Sept. 8. Plans include creation of a Grieving Wall for employees to express their sentiments about the tragedy. Also, there will be presentation of a multicultural, multi-faith service sponsored by Pastoral Services that will
give voice by music, prayers, poems and reflections to the suffering, anguish and search for hope experienced by persons affected directly and
indirectly by this disaster. This service of consolation is open to all Hospital employees, and is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 7, at 3:30 p.m.
in Duke North, Room 2002.
Any Duke employees directly affected by Hurricane Katrina -- especially those who have lost or are missing family or friends -- are also invited to
attend a planning meeting for an ongoing support group. This first meeting will be held in Duke North, Room 2253, on Tuesday, September 6 from 1:00
p.m. -2:00 p.m. and will be led by Muki Fairchild, MSW, and Andy Silberman, MSW, Co-Directors of Duke's Critical Incident Response Program.
More details about these and other events and programs will be announced via Blue Line in coming days. Please join us as we come together in
observance of the plight of those affected by this natural disaster, and may we continue working together to develop responses to the needs of the
Gulf Coast communities.
