Meetings to Organize Duke Community Aid to Katrina Victims on Tuesday, Sept. 6
Duke Community members can learn how to become involved in fund-raising, direct service and educational programming to aid victims of Hurricane Katrina, at two organizing meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2005.
One meeting will be held from noon to 1:30 p.m. in Von Canon C of the Bryan Center. A second meeting will be held from 9-10:30 p.m. in the upper east side of the Marketplace on East Campus. Those who plan to attend should e-mail Patricia Nobles at pnobles@duke.edu.
"Until the meeting on Tuesday, there are some immediate steps people may take to stay informed and to help," said Elaine Madison, director of the Community Service Center. "To stay current with Duke aid efforts, visit http://www.duke.edu/hurricanerelief, or subscribe to the newly created listserv, for specific information about events and ways to get involved.
"To make student contributions through Duke, go to https://aux16.auxserv.duke.edu/dco/katrina/index.htm," said Madison. "Duke Student Government, in cooperation with Dining Services, is coordinating a food points drive, with the proceeds going to the Red Cross. If people wish to donate to a national organization, there is a comprehensive list of state and national charities at http://www.usafreedomcorps.gov/.
"If students want to talk to other students who share their concerns about the victims of the hurricane, we encourage them to start discussion circles in their dorm, club, faith community or Greek organization," said Madison.
Madison urged those who are already part of a nascent relief effort to share what they are doing with the rest of the Duke community by notifying Eric Van Danen, director of communications for Student Affairs, e-mail eric.vandanen@duke.edu.
