Duke Chapel Raises Over $27,000 for Katrina Victims
Flood buckets and health kits also collected through Chapel effort
Read Dean Wells' sermon that he preached about Hurricane Katrina in Duke Chapel on September 4.
On September 4, 2005, Duke Chapel raised over $17,000 for relief of Hurricane Katrina victims. This offering was the largest in the history of Duke Chapel. The money will be distributed through the United Methodist Office of Relief. On September 11, an offering of over $10,000 was collected and will be sent to the office of Bishop Will Willimon, former Dean of the Chapel, to aid flood victims in Alabama.
It was estimated that 70 flood buckets and more than 225 health kits were collected on September 11 in addition to the offering. They were taken to a United Methodist Office of Relief Center in Goldsboro to be distributed to areas in need.
"We are praying for the victims of this terrible tragedy. Our desire is to respond in ways that are truly helpful and not merely sentimental," said Assistant Dean Craig Kocher.
Duke Chapel will also be sending a mission team to do flood relief in the Gulf Coast region during fall break in October.
The Deans of the Chapel and members of the religious life staff are available for pastoral care and counseling, especially for those who have a deep connection to the affected areas. For contact information, please visit www.chapel.duke.edu.
