The Golden Temple

The Golden Temple, also known as Amritsar (the original name of the lake on which the temple sits), is a sacred Buddhist retreat located in Amritsar, India. Buddha is thought to have spent time at this location in contemplation.

The Temple was originally founded by Guru Nanak, the founder of the Sikh religion. After his passing, his followeres continued to use this site and over time, it became a shrine for the Sikh religion. The Temple has been destroyed by Moslem invaders several times, but has been rebuilt and made more magnificent each time. Since 1767, the Sikhs have become strong enough, militarily speaking, to defend their territory.
