Environmental Alliance
Environmental Alliance is an undergraduate student organization committed to promoting the implementation of sustainable practices at Duke University. By educating, organizing and advocating, Environmental Allinace strives to make Duke University a model campus for environmental stewardship.
Recent work:
- EA runs the Eco-Olympics, an annual dorm vs. dorm energy, waste and water reduction competition.
- EA co-founded the Southeast Student Climate & Energy Network, a regional network of student organizations concerned about climate change that organizes coordinated campaigns.
- Along with students from UNC,
EA co-hosted the first annual Southeast Student Renewable Energy Conference.
- EA
won grant to run campus buses on a 20% blend of biodiesel, a cleaner, renewable and domestic alternative to diesel.
- In 2003, EA asked the university to put up $25,000 in savings generated by energy conservation measures to match student, faculty and staff purchases of wind power. The Duke Green Power Challenge was a tremendous success, resulting in the purchase of 2.5 million kWhs of wind power and Duke's introduction into the EPA's Green Power Partnerhsip.
- In 2004, Duke committed itself to a comprehenive green purchasing program. EA members initiated and pursued the discussion that led to the development of this program.
