Earth Month 2008
Everyone has heard of Earth Day. Well, Duke is celebrating Earth Month this year. Each week of April will be filled with fun and educational activities. Join us to learn how individuals affect the environment and simple steps we can each take to reduce our impact.
The festivities will start off with a presentation from Dr. Trask, Executive Vice President and Dean Chameides, Nicholas School of the Environment, about how Duke is going "green." Some of the other upcoming events include - a brown bag lunch series where experts will be on campus to discuss things such as home composting and how homeowners can reduce energy bills - a movie series to include a panel discussion with experts from "The 11th Hour" (Leonardo DiCaprio's film) - and special recycling event called Garbology, an interactive way to highlight what types of materials are recyclable on our campus and to showcase how well a specific building is recycling.
No Earth Month would be complete without an Earth Day Celebration. The 2008 Earth Day Sustainability Fair will take place on the West Campus Main Plaza, April 22nd, from 11:00 am - 3:00 pm. Businesses and organizations from campus and the community who have expertise in environmental issues will be here to educate and inform.
The Earth Day Celebration will be followed by a talk from Wallace J. Nichols. A Nicholas School graduate, Nichols is a renowned sea turtle expert. He works with universities and organizations to advance ocean protection while spearheading the Ocean Revolution, a program that inspires, involves and mentors the next generation of ocean conservationist.
2008 Duke Earth Month is sponsored in part by the Sustainable Duke program and the Office of the Executive Vice-President, Duke Recycles, Graduate & Professional Student Council, The Nicholas School of the Environment and Earth Sciences, Students for Sustainable Living, Environmental Alliance and Duke University Greening Initiative.
