Everyone has heard of Earth Day. Well, Duke is celebrating Earth Month this year. Each week of April will be filled with fun
and educational activities. Join us to learn how individuals effect the environment and simple steps we can each take to reduce

Primetime on Sustainability

Facilities Management Department Compost Surplus Day**
3:00 - 6:00pm
As materials from the campus grounds are collected during the year they are composted on site in the Duke Forest. During Earth
Month any surplus from this site is shared with the community.

2008 Annual Fuqua Footprints Conference: "Market-Based Approaches to Global Challenges"

Footprints 2008 examines the ways we can harness market forces to achieve positive, sustainable change as well as exposes
the dangers inherent when a new set of players enter spaces formerly inhabited primarily by NGOs and nonprofits.

The New Eco-Feminism: Seeds of Change and the Role of Fiction in the New Environmentalism

This event will feature a reading and discussion of the novel /All Over Creation /by Ruth Ozeki, along with two very brief articles offering scholarly background on seed
saving and local farming as forms of political resistance to corporate agribusiness. As usual, a fabulous and eco and animal friendly lunch will be served.

Garbology**

Garbologies are an interactive way to highlight what types of materials are recyclable on our campus and to show how well a specific
building is recycling. This year we will be removing a days worth of trash (everything thrown into the dumpster) from the Allen Building
and sorting it on the West Campus Quad. All the sorted material will be weighed to determine how much of the trash could have been recycled.

"The 11th Hour" Screening and Panel Discussion**

"The 11th Hour" documentary, narrated by Leonardo DiCaprio, explores how humanity has arrived at this critical moment in time; how we
live, how we impact the earth's ecosystems, and what we can do to change our course. The movie will be followed by a question-and-answer
session with a panel including Richard Dent, co-director of The 11th Hour Action Campaign, and Duke ecologist Stuart Pimm, who was among

Garbology**

This Garbology will take place on the Bryan Center Plaza during the Earth Day festival and will also be open to the public. The
trash to be sorted will be the material collected from the Plaza itself.
Earth Day Keynote Speaker - Wallace "J." Nichols Lecture and Eco-Reception
6 - 8pm (with an eco-reception following the talk)
Wallace "J." Nichols, a Nicholas School graduate and sea turtle expert, works with universities and organizations to advance ocean
protection and spearheads the Ocean Revolution, a program that inspires, involves and mentors the next generation of ocean conservationist.

In preparation for the Wallace "J." Nichols speech on Earth Day we will be showing "The 11th Hour" documentary on April 17th. Nichols
was one of the experts interviewed for the movie. This showing will be held in the LSRC, Love Auditorium B101.
Annual CASE Leadership in Social Entrepreneurship Award and Lecture

On April 22, CASE will present the 2008 CASE Leadership in Social Entrepreneurship Award to David Bornstein, journalist and author of How to Change the World: Social
Entrepreneurs and the Power of New Ideas, and other award-winning books. Bornstein has become a leader in sharing the stories and successes of social entrepreneurs
through his writing, drastically increasing the awareness of the field. His books have chronicled the worldwide growth of the anti-poverty strategy microfinance and the
growth of the social sector and of social entrepreneurship as a field. Bornstein will give a public talk after the award presentation. A reception will follow the lecture.

Service Projects
Saturday, April 5
Duke Forest Service Project**
9:00 - 12:00pm
The project will eliminate trails where they are no longer needed. It will involve raking and blocking the trails and generally
preparing the area for re-growth. Any one interested should meet at 9:00am at the Duke Forest maintenance shop, located next to the

Edens Stream Clean Up Service Project**

Volunteers will help clean the Edens stream here on campus. Any one interested should meet between 1:30 and 2:00 at the Edens Dr.

Carter School Service Project**
This will be the Facilities Management Department - Grounds annual beautification project. Every year Grounds employees work with
individuals in the community to complete a landscaping project. This project is open to the public. Interested volunteers RSVP to

SEEDS Service Project
SEEDS is a non-profit community garden whose goal is to teach people to care for the earth, themselves, and each other through a
variety of garden-based programs. This project will be open to the first 10 students who respond to Supriya Munshaw.

Are you interested in supporting local, sustainable agriculture in the Piedmont? The Piedmont Farm Tour is an annual tour for local farms in the Piedmont area of NC.
