Two Environmentally Friendly Duke Buildings Open in November
Many of the growing numbers of people trying to “go green” focus on lifestyle changes such as screwing in compact fluorescent light bulbs or tossing banana peels in the compost bucket. But it’s possible to do much more. Members of the Duke and Durham communities will be able to see the future for themselves this month as Duke dedicates two new “green” buildings: the Home Depot Smart Home and the French Family Science Center.

Nich School Dean Brings Political Edge

Cutting Tropical Deforestation to Inexpensively Avert Global Warming
An international team of 11 top forest and climate researchers, including civil and environmental engineer Roni Avissar of Duke's Pratt School of Engineering, found that cutting deforestation rates in half by mid-century would amount to 12 percent of the emissions reductions needed to keep concentrations of heat-trapping gases in the atmosphere at relatively safe levels.

Duke Adds Alkaline Batteries to Recycling Program
The Environmental Programs Division of the Occupational and Environmental Safety Office (OESO) started a recycling program earlier this year that accepted rechargeable batteries and cell phones. Recently, based on numerous requests, alkaline battery recycling has been added to the initiative.

Saving Energy Costs for Durham Families
Duke students have joined the cause of reducing home energy use in Durham through a new "Share the Light" program. Three Duke seniors – Billy Kennedy, Josh Posen, and Drew Tignanelli – earlier this week delivered packages of energy-saving lightbulbs to the Durham County Department of Social Services for free distribution to their clients.

Home Depot gives Pratt $2M for SmartHome
Students who will live in The Home Depot SmartHome will get to enjoy more advanced technologies than microwaves and mini-refrigerators in their rooms. The Home Depot will provide approximately two-million-dollars worth of cash and supplies during the next three years to support the construction of the 6,000-sq.-ft. facility located off Swift Avenue on Central Campus, officials announced Tuesday.

Duke Encourages Bicycling With Campus Bike Station
In a time of skyrocketing gas prices and increasing concern about global warming and dependence on foreign oil, Duke University is stepping up its commitment to bicycling as an alternative form of transportation to, from, and around campus. The Executive Vice President's Green Grant fund recently awarded the Duke Bike Advocates (DBA) almost $20,000 to finance the launch and first-year operating costs of a new Campus Bike Station.

A recent article on CNNMoney.com describes the trend toward more sustainable residence halls. The article highlights the West Quad dormitories at the University of South Carolina, Duke University's SmartHouse, and Tufts University's Sophia Gordon Hall. While noting the potential cost savings from green building, the article points out that "green dorms also serve a greater purpose - they help sell the university to prospective students and can dissuade upperclassmen from abandoning the dorm for an off-campus apartment."

Duke Students Celebrate with a Green Graduation
On May 13, 2006, over 100 new graduates of the Masters of Environmental Management program in the Nicholas School of the Environment and Earth Sciences were presented at the annual graduation recognition ceremony. However, this ceremony was a little different than year's past. This year, students from Duke University Greening Initiative (DUGI) and the Nicholas School Class of 2006 worked closely with Nicholas School staff to ensure that the 2006 recognition ceremony was a "green" event.

Duke's Parking & Transportation Services works with the Triangle Transit Authority (TTA) to organize the vanpool program for employees. TTA provides the van, gas and insurance costs, and Parking & Transportation offers a reserved parking space at Duke for the van at no charge and up to a dozen free daily parking passes for each rider for times when they need to drive separately.

Duke Student Government Votes for ePrint and Dorm Recycling Improvements
Last week members of Duke Student Government passed two resolutions to make Duke a greener campus. Students supported making double-sided printing the default on all campus computers and requiring increased numbers of recycling bins in residence halls in order to pair each trash can with a recycling option. The resolutions were presented by the undergraduate student group Environmental Alliance to raise student awareness of environmental issues at Duke.

Duke uses a 20% blend of biodiesel in its campus buses, however, biofuels are not without controversy. Dr. David Pimental will be speaking on his controversial finding that it requires significantly more fossil fuel inputs to produce biofuels than what is produced as either ethanol or biodiesel.
