Students Taking the Lead


Duke is fortunate to have a highly engaged and active set of student organizations working on reducing the University's environmental impact.  From the very beginning, students have led the way on everything from recycling to renewable energy.

In 1989, a dedicated group of students formed a collective and charged themselves with the task of recycling.  Since then, Duke Recycles has joined with the Facilities Management Department. It now services more than 800 locations in a single week, and accepts more than 17 items for recycling. Over the years, Duke Recycles has won numerous awards.
