Reserving a classroom for the semester

Individual faculty members are not responsible for scheduling their course(s) in classrooms. This task is shared between a designated departmental staff member and the school-specific registrar or classroom scheduler. more. . .

Scheduling space for a one-time event

Occasionally, faculty may wish to reserve a classroom for on-time events or events related to their course that only occur a few times a semester. more. . .

Descriptions of the Types of Classrooms Available

Inquiries about different classroom types should be directed to the office in each school that schedules classroom space (see above). There are three primary classifications for Arts & Sciences classrooms: those that accommodate small courses (<25 students); mid-size courses (>25, <100) and large lecture courses (>100). Within each of these categories there may be a variety of seating styles and other classroom attributes available. The online Classroom Search tool can be used to find classrooms with particular capacity, furniture, and equipment attributes. This tool can also be used to look up specific Arts & Sciences classrooms. Listings include a photograph of the room and other pertinent information about its physical and AV characteristics.

Computer labs and resources

  • Reserve an OIT computer lab. OIT maintains 21 academic computer labs across campus. These labs are open 24 hours a day and can be reserved for classroom instruction. The labs feature Windows, Macintosh, Sun, and Linux computers and high-speed laser printers. Each lab provides cutting-edge hardware and software to support academic activities such as word processing, Internet research, multimedia production, desktop publishing, and Web publishing.
  • The CIT Project Studio is a facility used by faculty and teaching staff for production work involved with CIT supported technology projects. Seven workstations provide a variety of basic and more advanced tools for document management, multimedia creation, and web authoring.
  • OIT Multimedia Project Studio. The MPS is a multimedia production facility open to faculty and students. Trained staff are available in the lab to help students use high-end, integrated hardware and software to create and edit graphics, Web pages, audio, and video for both coursework and personal projects. The lab is designed to meet evolving departmental requirements for students to create Web sites and multimedia as part of their coursework. Faculty may reserve this facility for their classes.
  • Franklin Center M3C. M3C is a mobile multimedia computer cluster that can be configured to take advantage of wireless networking zones in the John Hope Franklin Center.
  • Perkins Laptop Checkout Program. Duke University students and staff now have the opportunity to borrow laptop computers from the Circulation Desk at Perkins Library.
