Reflections | Projections 1998

The following is from the University of Illinois ACM chapter:

The student chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery at the University of Illinois is hosting Reflections | Projections, its annual student computing conference, on October 2-4, 1998, and we want you to attend.

Held in the Digital Computer Lab on campus, Reflections | Projections offers students from all over the country a chance to interact with computer industry professionals and to peek into the future of computing.

The conference begins with an employment fair on Friday, October 2, from 10-5. Thirty companies will be recruiting in the DCL atrium, including Abbott Laboratories; Crowe, Chizek, and Company LLP; CSG Systems, Inc.; International Telecommunication Data Systems; Lante Corporation; Lucent Technologies; Motorola, Inc.; PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP; STR; and Wolfram Research, Inc.

Bjarne Stroustrup, the creator of C++, will deliver the keynote address on Saturday. In addition, there are sessions covering these and more topics: Distributed Computing using Java Spaces, WindowsCE, Art and Music for Computer Scientists, Software Components, Mandatory Access Control and Other High Level Operating System Security Mechanisms, Pitfalls in Real Time Operating System Design, Practical Graphics Programming, Using Computers to Solve Genetics Problems, Java and Object Databases, and the Personal Software Process. There will be a round table discussion of Free Software and Open Source Development as well as a discussion of Women in Computer Science.

Also returning for its fourth year is MechMania, an artificial intelligence programming contest. Last year, teams from 8 different states battled to colonize extraterrestrial landscapes with their mechanical warriors. This year, 15 teams will compete to conquer the Vinyl Frontier. The contest is sponsored by Trilogy.

If you are a representative of an ACM chapter or other group of computer enthusiasts, consider attending the regional chapter meeting on Sunday morning. It is a way for you to exchange ideas with other groups around the country. If you are interested in attending, please mail acm@uiuc.edu and include anything you would like to discuss.

For complete information about the conference, take a look at http://www.acm.uiuc.edu/conference. Online registration is available there. Everyone is encouraged to attend - no ACM affiliation is required. Free housing with UIUC students is available.

The registration fee is $15, which includes entrance to all conference events, meals for the weekend, inclusion of your resume in the conference resume book, and a T-shirt. If you register before September 18, you will be eligible to win free software from Microsoft and Red Hat and free books from O'Reilly. You can mail your payment and resume to the ACM office before the conference: ACM Conference, 1304 W. Springfield Ave. MC258, Urbana, IL 61801.

If you have any questions about the conference, please email reflections@acm.uiuc.edu.
