Summer Research Fellowships

APSI will have summer research fellowships available to graduate students in East Asian Studies at Duke. The fellowships are open to East Asian Studies MA students at APSI as well as graduate students in other departments whose primary area of study is East Asia. Citizenship is not a requirement for this fellowship, though you must be a full-time student in order to apply for this fellowship. The purpose of the fellowship is to provide students working on a dissertation or an MA capstone research project with funding for travel to archival and research sites in East Asia during the summer of 2008. The maximum award will be $2,500.

To apply, please submit your application via email to Dana.Watson@duke.edu . The application deadline is February 15, 2008. Your application should include:

  • A 2-3 page application describing the research project, including rationale for the project and research methodology
  • A budget sheet that realistically projects travel, lodging, meals, and other research related expenses. Please also provide information about other potential sources of funding
  • A recommendation letter from a faculty member who will supervise the project.

Award decisions will be announced in mid-March. All recipients of the fellowship will be required to submit a 3-5 page report summarizing the results of their research by October 1, 2008. Recipients will also be asked to share their research experience with their fellow students at one of the monthly Asian Pacific Forums during the 08-09 academic year.

Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships (FLAS)

APSI administers both academic year (AY) and Summer FLAS fellowships for the U.S. Department of Education. For both fellowships, preference will be given to 1) students who are pursuing advanced level of language proficiency in Chinese, Japanese or Korean; and 2) Master's degree students who are more likely to pursue government service or enter a professional field. Application deadline for the 2008 summer and 2008-2009 AY FLAS fellowships will be February 29, 2008.
