History: A cooperative program between Duke and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, begun in the Spring of 1982 as the Duke-UNC Women's Studies Research Center. It was initially funded by the Ford Foundation to promote scholarship on women in the Carolinas and Virginia. The Center provides research support, in the form of stipends and grants, supports curriculum development projects, and undertakes to foster communication on relevant topics. The name was changed in 1987.Contents: Branches, (newsletter), 1982- , published biannually since 1987. Correspondence, reports, grant documents, printed matter, audio-visual media and other materials related to the Center's programs. Major activities that are reflected in the records include the Dialogues Between Black and White Women Conference as well as the Center's curriculum transformation program, which was funded, in part, by the Rockefeller Foundation. Other documents concern Pay Equity in North Carolina and What Difference Does Difference Make; the Rockefeller Humanist-in-Residence post-doctoral fellowships; the publication of Signs, a feminist journal; and Southern Women: The Intersection of Race, Class, and Gender, a working papers series.
