History: Established in a 1952 re-organization of the University Faculty, the Council was responsible for the governance of undergraduate education, a task previously carried out by the Faculty Council. The UFC included representatives from the Engineering and Nursing schools, and was chaired by the Dean of Trinity College. It first met on November 13, 1952. It was succeeded in October, 1971 by the Undergraduate Faculty Council of Arts and Sciences (q.v.).Standing Committees (1971) on Undergraduate Instruction (absorbed the Curriculum Committee and the Committee on Courses of Instruction in 1964-1965), Honors, Program II, the Faculty Advisory System, Residential Life, Study Abroad, and Undergraduate Admissions and Financial Aid. Ad hoc committees included those on Academic Standards, on Committees, on the Organization and Functions of the UFC and on the Duke Undergraduate Style Manual.
Organization: 1) Secretary; 2) Minutes; 3) Committees.
Contents: Minutes, memoranda, correspondence, questionnaires, reports of standing and ad hoc committees, and other papers pertaining to faculty oversight of undergraduate education. The bulk of the material, about 3 linear feet, consists of the records of the Subcommittee on Curriculum of the Committee on Undergraduate Instruction. Of this, the Krueger Report files (1967-1968) bulk the largest. The report, 4Varieties of Learning Experience5 (1968), led to the substantial changes in the undergraduate course of study known as the "new curriculum." The subcommittee files include results of a survey of faculty members and freshmen participating in small group learning experiences. The other major curriculum study is the Parker report (1960). Records of the Committees on Program II and on Study Abroad contain student-identifiable academic records, including transcripts, students' program proposals, and faculty evaluations, and are restricted under FERPA. The Program II files contain material from the period after 1971, when UFCAS was established. Records of the Supervisory Committee for the Faculty Advisory System include scattered minutes of the committee, memoranda, correspondence, and reports, as well as handbooks for faculty advisers from the period 1952-1964. A number of ad hoc and superceded committees' files are also in the collection.
Restriction: Access to and use of student records is regulated by FERPA.
Guides: Accession records are in the collection file.
Includes records of the Faculty Council ( -1952) that were interfiled in UFC records.
