History: Women's studies courses had been offered at Duke since 1968. In 1983 the program was formally established under the direction of Dr. Jean O'Barr.

Contents: Correspondence, reports, printed matter, student papers, surveys, audio and videotapes, and other materials, with bulk dates 1983-1986, pertaining to the program's offerings, personnel, and alumnae. Includes newsletters, calendars, clippings, and flyers; the Duke University Alumnae Survey, consisting of completed survey forms of graduate and undergraduate alumnae, from the class of 1928 to the class of 1986, along with data tabluations, and correspondence sent with the forms. The survey was designed to elicit responses about the experience of women at Duke. Among the student papers are transcripts and/or reports by eighty students of oral history "interviews with women one or two generations removed, on the subject of feminism." The interviews were done as one of the requirements for IDC 103, Introduction to Women's Studies. Most are 3-5 pages in length, and were submitted in March of 1990; many appear to be with relatives.
