MAJOR
REQUIREMENTS
Introductory
Courses: Majors are required to take two introductory
courses by the end of their sophomore year, if possible. One must be CST
110, Global Human Geography, a course that examines world development
and modernization through the lenses of geography, as well as patterns
of adaptation by peoples and societies to different physical environments
and the changing world economy.
Language
Courses: Four semester courses in a single language
of the primary area are required. Students with AP credits or other evidence
of language proficiency are not exempted from this requirement.
Exceptions can be made, with the consent of the Director, for students
whose first language is that used in their primary area or when the second
year of a language is not taught at Duke or is unavailable at a sufficiently
advanced level.
Primary Geographic
Area: Majors are required to take four semester
courses in the geographic area of special interest (the area of the language
studied). They are strongly encouraged to choose courses from several
disciplines.
Secondary
Geographic Area: Two semester courses in a second
geographic area are required. To assure breadth of focus in a student's
program, if either Western or Eastern Europe is the first area, the student
is encouraged, but not required, to select a non-European area for the
second.
Comparative/Global
Issues Courses: To satisfy this requirement, each student must
elect one comparative/global issue course plus CST 125,
Comparative Approaches to Global Issues. CST 125 is coordinated by faculty
members affiliated with CAS and also includes guest lecturers. At once
interdisciplinary and global, it introduces students to a broad range
of research data and comparative methods in current use by Duke faculty.
Majors are strongly encouraged to take the course in their sophomore or
junior year.
Senior Seminar
(CST 150S): This course is the honors seminar for CAS majors,
taught in the spring semester. Candidates with a minimum GPA of 3.3 apply
in their junior year. The CAS Steering Committee makes the selections
based on the feasibility of the proposed topic and the student's motivation
and skills to carry it out successfully.
