Some schools seeking to take a transformative step have implemented a laptop computer requirement for their students. A requirement of this sort levels the playing field between students, establishes a common set of hardware and software tools, and allows faculty to use additional teaching tools if they choose. Provost Lange has asked that we plan for CITIE assuming that laptops will be required for incoming students in the fall of 2002, but he has also asked that we consider the benefits, costs, and alternatives so that a final decision can be made early in the fall of 2001.
