Welcome! The Duke University String School,
which was founded by myself and a member of the Ciompi Quartet, Arlene di
Cecco, in 1967, has been part of Duke for nearly forty years. Our basic
principle is that of the teaching of the love of good music, the devotion to
the quality of one's own performance of that music and a sense of integrity in
one's work. We do this through the means of the teaching of the violin, viola,
cello and bass, through our chamber music and through our orchestras. In recent
years, we have also added the base of understanding of the form of music,
classes in theory.
We hope to instill love for music,
understanding of the value of work and a feeling for one's own possibilities as
they are realized in the development of musical skill on stringed instruments.
We hope our students will not only make concerts, but go to them, create them
and add the art of music to their lives. One of the distinguishing
characteristics of human beings is their ability to make beautiful sound and to
remember it. These are big goals to add this to each student's life, but that
is what we are aiming for. That and the joy that comes from such
accomplishment.
