Magic Knights Rayearth

The world of Cefiro is in chaos. Emeraude-hime, the pillar of Cefiro, must hold the world together using her prayers. But the priest Zagato has captured her, and without her prayers, Cefiro has become plagued by monsters and demons, and will eventually literally fall apart. By the force of her will, she summons the only ones who can save Cefiro, the Legendary Magic Knights. She summons three 14-year-old eighth graders on field trips to the Tokyo Tower. When they arrive, they are met by the Master Mage Clef, who tells them of Cefiro and then awakens their magical abilities. Now, in order to save Cefiro and return home, they must fulfill their destiny and survive many trials to become Magic Knights...
Hikaru

Shidou Hikaru is the most enthusiastic and energetic of the three. She is naive, pure, honest, and almost always happy. She has been studying kendo with her three older brothers since she was very young. She possesses a strong kinship with animals, and as a result, gets along with and understands Mokona very well. Due to her height and attitude, she is often mistaken for a younger girl. Her magic is fire-based, and her name means "light of the lion shrine" in Japanese.

Ryuuzaki Umi is the most outspoken of the three, completely unafraid to speak her mind. She is also somewhat short-tempered and tends to overreact animatedly (no pun intended). Initially, she was quite homesick, and focused on returning to Tokyo. She is a member of the fencing team, and is extremely skilled with rapiers and other light, piercing swords. Her attitude towards Mokona is *ahem* somewhat adversarial and violent. She uses water magic, and her name means "sea of the dragon-blossom" in Japanese.

Umi
Fuu

Houoji Fuu is the most logical, rational, and level-headed of the three. Very rarely does she quit smiling or get angry. She is exceedingly polite, even towards monsters and Mokona, but her remarks are nonetheless direct and to the point. A skilled archer, her first weapon is a bow, but she becomes very skilled with her sword as well. She eventually develops a romantic interest in Ferrio, a secretive young man they meet in Cefiro. She learns wind-magic, and her name means "wind of the phoenix-temple" in Japanese.

Mokona is their guide on their quests in Cefiro. It knows where they are must go and leads them there. Mokona has a nasty habit of disappearing whenever combat starts, much to Umi's annoyance. Mokona's vocabulary is rather limited, consisting only of "Puu!" It can generate many useful items from the gem in its forehead, including a tent, food, and a small flying/floating vessel. In addition, Clef will occasionally communicate through the gem. Mokona's name comes from the pseudonym of CLAMP's lead artist, Mokona Apapa.
