Purchasing
Procurement Services' Guidelines
Duke's Green Purchasing Program helps university purchasers and employees make environmentally responsible purchasing decisions to reduce negative effects on human health and the environment.
In July of 2004, Duke adopted a set of Environmentally Preferable Purchasing Guidelines (PDF) to reduce our environmental impact in six strategic areas:
Source Reduction
Forest Conservation
Recycled Content
Landscaping

Office Products
During the summer of 2004, Corporate Express, Duke's sole office products supplier, hired an intern to work on identifying, promoting and tracking environmentally preferable office products at Duke. The internship lead to the creation of an "EarthSaver" logo used to designate products as environmentally-preferable. In the programs first year, use of environmentally preferable products at Duke more than doubled. Corporate Express has since developed a tool to filter out environmentally preferable products through your search results.
Buildings, Construction and Furnishings
Green purchasing in this area is covered comprehensively under Duke's commitment to LEED construction.
Vehicles
Facilities Management partnered several years ago with the Triangle Clean Cities program to install a compressed natural gas (CNG) filling station and purchase CNG vehicles for a large percentage of the department's fleet. Duke's landscaping crews primarily use all-electric John Deere Gators and GM Gems.
