Duke Farmers Market Season Underway
The Duke Farmers Market opened on Friday, April 24th with a swell of interest from University and Hospital staff, eager for a taste of fresh, seasonal produce and other goods from area farmers. The Duke Farmers Market is open from 11AM-2PM every Friday from April 24 to July 31, and every other Friday from July 31 to September 25, and is a great opportunity to meet a local farmer, ask questions about how your food is grown, taste something new and get recipe ideas.
Live For Life, the office responsible for bringing the Farmers Market to Duke, chose, "Be a Locavore" for the market's theme this year. The locavore theme plays to growing interest in sustainable food systems that meet our nutritional needs in a way that minimizes environmental repercussions and does not deplete future generations resources or well-being. Market patrons at last week's opening event expressed numerous reasons for using the Duke Farmers Market, including convenience, health, food security, a desire to keep income in their community, and a preference for fresh or unique items.
Construction on the parking lot just north of the the Medical Book Store cleared up just in time for the Market's opening event, but Live For Life organizers are looking foward to moving the market to a more accessible and greener location on campus later this summer. Staff and students who have a hard time accessing the market at that time might check out the Duke Mobile Farmers Market!
