FEMMES Summer Camp 2010

We held our second FEMMES Summer Camp this year from August 16-20th. Thank you to all of our participants and to everyone who was involved. It was a huge success! The campers participated in many hands-on activities related to the week's theme of "Healthy Living," which included topics in nutrition, environmental health, human body systems, and fitness. Additionally, the campers visited the Duke University Wetland Center's Stream and Wetland Assessment Management Park (SWAMP), where they learned about wetland restoration in relation to maintaining a healthy environment. Check us out in the DUWC's news report here. We also took a field trip to the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, where the campers had fun exploring while completing a questionnaire scavenger hunt.

For more information on the field trips, visit the Duke University Wetland Center and NC Museum of Natural Sciences websites.

FEMMES 2011 Registration is Now Open!

FEMMES Capstone 2011 is an event for 4th-6th grade girls in Durham schools. The date of the event is February 26. The deadline for registration is February 12. For more information, click here.

FEMMES (Females Excelling More in Math, Engineering, and Science) is a student-run organization, founded in 2006 by Vicki Weston, that hosts educational outreach programs related to math, science and engineering for 4th-6th grade girls from Durham public schools. We encourage the girls to explore their potential in math, engineering, and science through an annual, free-of-charge, one-day capstone event and several after-school programs. Through FEMMES, female Duke undergraduates, graduates, and faculty members volunteer their time to instill enthusiasm about their careers in the developing minds of young women. The Duke students form personal relationships with the participants of our programs and have a positive influence on the girls' views of women in math, engineering, and science.

We are very excited to announce that FEMMES has won the Power in Numbers grant! Thank you for your support!
