The mission of the Association of Fire Ecology (AFE) is to improve the knowledge and use of fire in land management practices and natural ecosystem functions through science and education. Fire is increasingly recognized as a vital component of many ecosystems and greater understanding is necessary for more effective application by environmental managers. The Duke University Student Chapter of AFE, founded in Spring 2008, seeks to promote the mission of AFE at both local and regional levels via student and public activities. These include the coordination of guest speakers and conferences, facilitation of student training and professional certifications, and the contribution of the knowledge of fire in the Southeast to national AFE conferences. Given the importance of fire in many forested ecosystems, the chapter will also help expand the scope of and opportunities for practical training within the Nicholas School’s Master’s of Forestry program.
