Services: 8:30am and 11:00am
College Sunday School (breakfast included!): 9:45am

Church Description

Blacknall has been in West Durham since the beginning of the 1900s when it ministered to local mill workers. Now, its location equips the church to minister to college students: Blacknall is one and a half blocks off East Campus, on your right just before you get to Cosmic Cantina!

Many people in the congregation have a relationship with Duke or other local universities and love talking to and serving college students. The college ministers are Duke Divinity School interns who are available on and off campus to meet with undergraduates who have questions or are looking for discipleship. They also teach the college Sunday School class. In Sunday School we eat bagels, read and study scripture, and share prayer requests.

One of the things I love about Blacknall is that it is a church home to people of all ages. Here you can serve in the nursery and play with babies. You can be adopted by a family in the church and eat meals with them in their home. You can meet and learn from older, wiser people. I also have learned to love worshipping through song at Blacknall. At first I thought the songs were a little old-fashioned, but then I noticed how purposefully the music director chooses hymns and praise songs and I began to really appreciate the words we sing. Now I miss Blacknall whenever I'm away from Durham!

Church Description

Chapel Hill Bible Church is a multi-ethnic, multi-generational church that has been serving the Triangle area since 1970. A typical Sunday starts with breakfast (Panera bagels provided!) outside the College Encounter Sunday School room. Duke and Carolina students greet each other before heading in to hear announcements about how everyone can be involved in the church's various ministries. Scott Vermilion, the university minister, welcomes us and dives right in teaching from a passage of scripture, giving plenty of background and offering lots of opportunities for discussion. After the lesson is over, we pray and get ready for service. Nat Stine is the minister for worship, which can include anything from hymns to Christian contemporary music, gospel to a cappella. Once, worship was led by members of Nairobi Chapel, a Kenyan church that partners with CHBC, and that was a real treat! The sermon is given by Pastor Mark Acuff, who expands on a passage's every detail and is not afraid to use humor or sports to illustrate a point. After the service is over, if you're a first-, second-, or third-timer, you get a delicious loaf of dessert bread. Then, we all go to Grace's for some more fun and fellowship, unless there's lunch at the church, where we meet new CHBCers or catch up with old ones. We like meeting people, and we would love to meet you! If you're interested in checking out CHBC, just e-mail Tony Zhang (ttz2@duke.edu) for a ride.

There isn't a separate college ministry yet; the church is more family oriented (mostly young families).

We are a local church with a global mission, seeking to spread the glory of God in Durham and all around the world. At FBC, you'll have the opportunity to participate in a discussion about a Bible passage with students from UNC, sing praises to God with an amazing choir and orchestra, listen to a riveting sermon by an MIT-grad engineer-turned-pastor, and build relationships with everyone from Duke seniors to pre-schoolers to elderly folk. FBC Durham is clearly a church that is alive and growing--and it is the place that many Duke students have decided to call home.

Getting to church couldn't be easier--the FBC van swings by the East bus stop at 9:20 and the West bus stop at 9:30 am. Bible For Life (aka Sunday school) for college students begins at 9:45 am (and breakfast has lovingly been prepared for us). After BFL, worship service is 11 am - 12:30 pm. There are rides back to East, West, Grace's Cafe, etc. ...

If you're looking for a church where you can both serve and be served, or if you're just looking for a place where you can learn more about God (while enjoying some good food and friends!), consider visiting FBC--we'd love to worship with you!

Korean Service: 11:00 AM
English Sunday School: 11:00 AM

Church Description

Grace Mission Ministries is the English speaking branch of North Carolina Korean Presbyterian Church. While it is part of a Korean Church, the English Ministry is multi-cultural. GMM is composed primarily of college students (from Duke University, UNC-Chapel Hill, and NC State), and young adults and families in the Research Triangle District. While being diverse due to the many college campuses and North Carolina districts it serves, GMM is definitely a place focused on community, biblical fellowship, and missions. The pastor of GMM is Pastor Joshua Moon who is not only one of the most dedicated and passionate pastors we know (he recently moved down to North Carolina, but he used to live in Virginia and make a 3 hour trip every weekend in order to serve at GMM) , but also one of the most energetic and fun-loving 40 year olds in the world (especially as a fairly new father of triplets). He is always willing to talk to anyone and everyone who needs him and is crazy about mission trips and spreading the gospel and showing God's love to the local RTP district and over-seas.

Please take a moment to look at our mission statement and our values as a Church:

Our Mission
Our mission is to become disciples of Christ who serve God's Kingdom by sharing His love.

Our Values
*We Value Worship* - In Christ we will worship in two ways: biblically grounded worship services through our corporate church community, and a lifestyle of worship that reflects our attitude towards Christ.

*We Value Outreach* - In Christ we will follow His teachings by actively reaching out within the body of believers and to those who have not heard or accepted the Good News.

*We Value Discipleship* - In Christ we will strive to grow as His disciples by committing ourselves to spiritual disciplines and strong interpersonal relationships.

*We Value Teaching* - In Christ we will train and equip the body of believers with clear biblical teachings and development of our spiritual gifts.

Logistics:
GMM offers a morning service as 9:30am and Sunday School Classes at 11:00am followed by lunch (free of charge and is usually delicious Korean food) and after-church fellowship sports activities. In terms of discipleship, there are weekly small groups available for young adults and campus small groups for the college ministry. GMM also has a weekly Friday Fellowship (one for college students and one for young adults) know as FNF (Friday Night Fellowship) which inclues a time of corporate worship, teaching, and fellowship (eating out, service activities, broom ball, movies, ANYTHING!). In terms of missions, GMM has annual short term Spring Break Mission trips (previous trips have been Hurricane Katrina Relief and Washington DC Inner City Ministries) and Summer Mission trips (China, South Korea, Mongolia, Africa, South America). GMM also has bi-annual retreats (one in the Fall and one in the Spring) for those that are interested in coming.

Rides:
Rides are provided every morning at 8:50am at East Campus and West Campus bus stops.

GMM is a church that is centered on the gospel and dedicated to planting and nurturing disciples of Christ. We are always eager to meet new people and hope that you are able to come and visit us. Please feel free to contact the GMM's Duke campus coordinators listed above. Please also visit our website: www.gmm.nckpc.org to find out more information about our church, get directions, or just to see some pictures of past events! We hope to see you soon :)

Services: 8:00, 9:30, and 11:00 AM
College Sunday School: 9:30AM

Church Description

The Summit Church has grown a ton since I first started attending the church three years ago. About one and a half years ago, the church sold its property and began to meet at Riverside High School while praying about and waiting on God to show them where He would have them build a new, larger church building, to accommodate the much larger congregation (of about 1,200 attendees every Sunday). It is a little weird at first to attend a worship service in the auditorium of a high school, but it hasn't stopped the church from continuing to grow in numbers. JD Greear is an amazing pastor who is sold out for God and who passionately preaches Bible-based, highly engaging messages that are applicable to our daily lives. The Gospel is made clear each and every week, and there are often series that are aimed at visitors who may be skeptical about Christianity but are trying to find the truth. Even then, the sermons continue to challenge all present. The worship through music is contemporary, lively, and focused on giving all praise to God. The church is committed to developing authentic Christians and preparing them to share the Gospel in different ways to reach all different kinds of people. The Summit is a church that is passionate about prayer with a heart for missions and evangelism. It has an especially heavy burden to reach out to those in need spiritually, physically, and financially in Durham and creates opportunities to serve in the community in different ways throughout the year. Brad O'Brien is the College Pastor at Summit and is an excellent teacher. This fall, we are going to meet in one large group each Sunday morning at 9:30 AM at the Summit's other building on Cole Mill Road about a mile away from the high school (if you need directions or want a ride, e-mail me - aji@duke.edu). I believe Brad will teach most weeks and then invite other guests to speak on certain topics they are especially familiar with occasionally. Since the Summit is a large church, there are a wide variety of ministries to get involved in and tons of people to meet, but it does take a lot of effort and personal motivation to do so. Often people new to the Summit get lost in the crowd and have complained about not being able to meet a lot of people there. It is very easy to go to the Summit every week with your friends for an entire year and not really meet anyone (except maybe saying hi and having a very quick superficial kind of conversation with the people sitting around you). However, if one makes an attempt to get involved, I tell you, it is possible. =) Becoming a member, going to prayer meetings, going to Sunday school every week, participating in special outreach events throughout the year, and/or just making an effort to talk to people other than those you came with can help a lot.

Service: 9:30 and 11:15 AM

Church Description

Vintage 21: "a community of God seekers, God followers and God doubters"

The Name
"Vintage" stands for authentic Christianity, dating all the way back to the first followers of Christ. The early followers of Jesus spent time with Him during his life here on earth, and had a direct model for living. This genuine faith is what we are looking to live out. Not for the sake of tradition, family ties, or emotions, but because the life of Christ is the most beautiful life ever lived. "21" stands for the 21st Century. The message of Jesus Christ is as relevant now as it was for the first century followers, and our goal is to take their passion and dedication to Jesus and apply it to our lives today.

Vision
We exist to establish a community of God-seekers, God-followers, and God-doubters who explore the deep message of Christ.

Mission
We desire to love God and the world by:

  • Sharing the hope of Jesus Christ with people living in the Triangle
  • Journeying together into a profound relationship with the Trinity: God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit.
  • Wrestling with the message of Jesus and pursuing the path that He directed: life to the full
Our Beliefs (the Apostle's Creed) We believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. We believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified and buried; he descended into Hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian church of all times and all places, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Service: 9:30 AM
Sunday School: 8:30 AM

Church Description

The most important thing for me in a church is the teaching, and strength in this area is one thing that drew me to Zion Temple. Our motto is "Empowering People to Live with Purpose," and I like this because it really captures what Zion Temple is about. We are about developing a relationship with God and loving people, not doing things simply out of tradition. We're community minded, and strive to edify each other not only in the church, but also to have an impact on the greater Durham community. For example, we have received a grant in collaboration with Durham Parks & Recs that enables us to run a friday night hang-out program (Da Basement) for teens that provides them a safe place for them to get together to play video games, basketball, etc, in addition to having a discussion about issues of importance to them. We also do things like collect canned goods for needy families and support HIV/AIDS outreach programs.

Zion Temple is a predominantly black church, but as far as the worship service goes, there's no set style and the worship culture often varies from week to week. We sing a mixture of contemporary/urban and old school gospel music, (on youth Sunday we often even have our in house dj spinning). People feel free to "come as they are," and to worship however they feel most comfortable. On any given sunday you'll see attire varying from from jeans to suits and ties.

Our pastor, the Reverend Cheryl D. Moore, is an annointed woman of God and a dynamic preacher. She loves the Lord and is passionate about sharing the word he places on her heart each week. I look forward to the teaching she brings from week to week. I've heard many gifted preachers at different churches, but this is the first time I've ever had a pastor and a body of believers that truly felt like family. If you've never experienced anything like that I encourage you to come visit. It's an awesome sense of community, and we're always looking to grow so I hope to see you there!
