

Do I need to have a teaching license, or education coursework,
before applying to the MAT Program?
No. MAT assumes no prior course work in education and does not accept
applications from previously licensed teachers.
I want to teach at the elementary and middle school level.
Does Duke offer a program for me?
No. The only graduate teacher preparation program that Duke offers is the
MAT, which prepares students for careers as secondary school teachers.
What entrance tests are required?
The GRE general test is required for admission.
How does Duke's MAT program differ from other teacher preparation
programs?
Duke's MAT puts more emphasis on advanced study in the teaching field and
supervised experience teaching, and less emphasis on the study of education
than most other teacher preparation programs.
How large is the program?
Average class size is fifteen.
Do I need to take the subject area of the Graduate Record
Exam?
No, just the general test is required for admission.
Can I study part time?
Prior to the internship year, students may choose to study part time within
their academic department. However, during the internship year, students
are required to take at least one course in their academic field each
semester.
How long does it take to complete the program?
The program is typically completed in one year - students who begin the
program in July usually complete the program the following June.
How do I apply for financial aid?
Indicate on the application that you are interested in being considered
for financial support. Complete the Free Financial Aid Form prior
to May 1.
How do I apply for the Noyce Fellowship or the Durham Teaching
Fellowship?
Indicate on item 10. of the application that you want to be considered
for a special award.
