Master of Arts in Teaching Duke University

Typically, students begin the MAT Program in July and complete all degree requirements the following June. MAT classes begin July 1 and continue through June 30 of the following year.

The normal sequence is:

* First summer – education courses (MAT-302 and MAT-303)

* Fall semester – one education course, internship and one course in the major field

* Spring semester – one education course, internship and two courses in the major field

* Second summer – two courses in the major field

In some cases students choose to begin the Program early and take graduate level courses in their teaching field prior to their internship year. In such cases students may choose either part-time or full-time study. However, during the internship year, students are required to take at least one course in their academic major each semester for a total of nine hours.
