Who We Are
We are a
diverse group of students committed to serving our community,
building relationships,
and preparing
for our future.
We
represent many interests and majors. Some of us are interested in
careers in the health professions. Some of us are not.
We believe
that community service is an integral part of learning. Many
of our officers and members first began volunteering at Erwin
Gardens as part of a service-learning requirement in sociology classes
on death
and dying and aging and health taught by our faculty sponsor Dr.
Deborah Gold,
the director of the Human Development Program and Associate Professor
of
Medical Sociology. The Adopt-A-Grandparent program was originally
founded in 2000 by Julie Linton, who is now finishing medical school at
Penn.
What
We
Do
We
put on
programs on Saturdays and other select days throughout the academic
school year for residents of Erwin Gardens, a Medicaid/Medicare
facility within 10 minutes walking distance from Duke University’s West
Campus.
Our
programs are extensive. They include weekly bingo Saturday afternoons
and monthly special events. In the past, we have held special events
for Thanksgiving, Halloween, winter holidays, Valentine’s Day, Mardi
Gras, and Senior Prom.
As
part of
our effort to build a sense of community and camaraderie amongst club
members, we have weekly informal lunches prior
to afternoon bingo. We gather at the Loop on West Campus for lunch and
discussion. We are invested in each other’s lives as friends and
partners in serving our community.
