Major and Minor

Major in Chinese

A major in Asian and African Languages and Literature with a concentration in Chinese requires a minimum of 10 courses. Potential majors should consult with Professor Kang Liu (liukang@duke.edu) or Guo-Juin Hong (gjhong@duke.edu).

Suggested curriculum for students who take Elementary Chinese through the regular track (for more information, please see AALL/major & minor). Note that the language courses that are taken out of sequence cannot be counted towards the Major/Minor requirement.

Minor in Chinese

A minor in AALL with concentration in Chinese requires five courses, for instance, CHN 63, CHN 64, CHN 125, CHN 126, AALL 172S or AALL 188. Please contact Professor Carolyn Lee for further information.

The Duke Study in China Program (DSIC) in Regular Semester*

For the Major:

Two English taught content courses (including Chinese 193) from the Duke Study in China Program during the regular semester count towards the Chinese literature/culture course requirements for the AALL Major.
Language courses apply towards the AALL Chinese Major requirements

For the Minor:

Only language courses apply towards the Minor. Required cultural/content courses have to be taken within the AALL department on the Duke campus.

*Please note that the DSIC summer program only offers Language courses which count towards the language requirements of either Chinese Major or Minor
