Overview
The Japanese program provides high-quality, intensive language training. It offers a four-year curriculum built on communicative, task-based and content-based approaches. Instruction aims to develop four skill areas: aural/oral/reading/writing skills and cultural awareness in an integrated manner through carefully chosen materials. It emphasizes the performance of tasks in the target language.
Along with the language courses, literature/culture courses are also offered in the department. A major and minor with concentration in Japanese are available. There are a variety of study abroad opportunities for students of Japanese: two exchange programs and several Duke-approved programs.
