Guidelines for Self-Placement in Japanese Language Courses

Note: Students with prior knowledge of Japanese are recommended to take a placement test. Your self-placement decision must be approved by the instructor or the Japanese Language Coordinator, Prof. Hitomi Endo, before the semester begins or on the first day of classes.  ( If you took an AP Exam in Japanese Language and Culture and scored 4/5, you will receive Duke credit for JPN63. You are eligible to take JPN64 or JPN 125. Please consult the coordinator. )

JPN001 Elementary Japanese (first half, offered in fall semester only)

Student profile:

• students who have never studied Japanese
• students who have studied Japanese for 1-2 years in high school

JPN002 Elementary Japanese (second half, offered in spring semester only)

Student profile:

• students who have completed Japanese 001 at Duke or its equivalent at a college level
• students who have studied Japanese in high school for more than 2 years
• students who can read and write approximately 100 kanji

JPN063 Intermediate Japanese (first half, offered in fall semester only)

Student profile:

• students who have completed Japanese 002 at Duke or Elementary Japanese at a college level
• students who have studied Japanese for 3-4 years in high school
• students who have acquired basic grammar and can read and write approximately 200 kanji

JPN064 Intermediate Japanese (second half, offered in spring semester only)

Student profile:

• students who have completed Japanese 63 at Duke or its equivalent at a college level
• students who have had 4 years of study in a strong high school program and did well in the courses
• students who have acquired most of essential grammar and can read and write approximately 300 kanji

JPN 125 (fall semester)/126 (spring semester) Advanced Japanese

Student profile:

• students who have completed Japanese 064 at Duke or its equivalent at a college level
• students who have lived in Japan and had formal language training
• students who have acquired intermediate grammar and can read and write approximately 500 kanji

JPN 183S (fall semester)/184S (spring semester) Topics in Japanese

Student profile:

• students who have completed Japanese 126 at Duke or Advanced Japanese at a college level
• students who have lived in Japan and had formal language training
• students who have acquired intermediate grammar and vocabulary and can read and write approximately 800 kanji
