Study Abroad:
Study abroad opportunities exist throughout Asia & Africa. Whether you are interested in going somewhere for a summer, one semester, or the entire academic year, there is probably some type of program that will meet your needs. Duke University runs several programs in areas covered by the languages of the Department of Asian & African Languages & Literature. If no Duke University programs exists, then there certainly is a Duke-approved program whose credit will transfer to the Duke transcript.
For information on specific programs, check out the language pages for the area you would like to visit.
In general, most study abroad programs in Asia & Africa teach courses in English and do not require knowledge of the local language. However, if your goal is to have a rich experience in the local culture of the country, then language study before you arrive in the country will greatly enhance your time abroad. Furthermore, if your goal is language acquisition, then the more you can accomplish in the language before you go abroad, the more you will learn while abroad.
