motivated encoding

Do we preferentially remember what we want to remember? Are you more likely to remember how to get to a concert you're excited to see, or how to get to the DMV to renew your registration?

In the Motivated Encoding project, we offer participants rewards for learning, in order to engage neural antecedents of memory formation. In the first study, participants memorized color pictures of scenes for a test the next day. Pictures were worth different monetary amounts on the test. By forewarning participants that either a “valuable” or “cheap” picture was about to appear when they were studied, we enhanced memory for valuable pictures. We also elicited brain activations that selectively preceded those valuable pictures that were later remembered.
