Volunteers
Duke- RTP Chapter
"Hi all, I'm Malu (short for Malavika). I'm a third year Graduate
Student at the Department of Neurobiology I've been with AID for the last two
years. It is the project co-ordination aspect of AID that interests me the most
and I have been the Chapter's Overall Project Co-coordinator for a year now. Fun
things that I do include sketching ( more like doodling and reading infinite
live news feeds :) "
Malavika
AID Duke President
"People often ask me why I joined AID. I can't think of a single
reason why. It could have been a mix of my desire to put my free time to good
use, contribute towards a worthy cause and perhaps to hang out with the "cool"
AIDers in our chapter. My three years in AID has been quite fast track.. I went
from being the newbie, into a project coordinator, event coordinator and a
chapter president in what seems like no time. It has been a great learning
experience and I have had the most wonderful time knowing all the AIDers.

"I am a second year graduate student in the department of
Electrical and Computer Engineering at Duke University. I have been a volunteer
with AID since Jan. 09. In my view, AID is a great platform for making a small
contribution toward grass-root level development in India in spite of being so
far away from home. Plus I get to hang out with a wonderful bunch of
people!"
Sulochana
AID Duke Treasurer

been at Duke for the past 2 years. In these 2 years apart from doing research I
have been an active AID volunteer. Areas of interest are Health, Women's
empowerment and Education. One of the highlights of being part of AID was hosting
the Annual Aid conference here at Duke inMay 2009. "

"Hi, I am Bono Sen. My day job is being program manager for science
educationand outreach at NIEHS, my passion is to volunteer for AID. AID has
providedme the opportunity to help the under served in India not just by
donating and fundraising, but actually being involved in the grassroots workin
India from half way across the world through project coordination. This is an
unique aspect of AID which I love. I love the opportunity of being able to get
to know and work with folks in India whose life's mission is service. Now
instead of going home, hanging out with friends and family, shopping and being a
tourist, I look forward to really getting to know India and its people through
site visits to our NGO partners located all across India. AID Duke/RTP is a
bunch of dedicated volunteers who know not only how to have fun while doing
serious work, but also know how to liven the dance floor on Bollywood night and
I am glad to be a part of this team. I invite other interested folks to come
check us out at our weekly meetings..."

"I am a second year graduate student in Duke cell biology. I study
heart stem cells. I joined AID because I was a member of students for Bhopal
group and was aware of Rachna Dhingra's work. I am also interested in fair trade
and creating livelihood for women, which i can do by promoting jeevika
clothings. In AID i can use my creativity skills and marketing skills for a good
cause."

"A graduate student in the Department of Immunology at Duke, I’ve
been volunteering with AID from 2007 and the experience has certainly been
enjoyable! I think helping out with an organization like AID has given me the
opportunity to meet new people, have new experiences and develop new skills, all
while contributing to a good cause. What better reason to do it? J CSHs,
conference calls, (heated) project reviews, (frenzied) event planning, fun
retreats with great food.. there’s enough action at AID to keep me on my
toes!"

"I am Srinivas Nagabhushan Rao Chadaram, better known as Naga
amongst friends in Association for India's Development (AID). I am a PhD in
Zoology and Neurobiology from the University of Idaho - Moscow, USA,
specializing in nerve regeneration. I worked as a research scientist at the Duke
University Medical Center past 7 years. My move to Duke in 2002 was instrumental
in changing my life in more ways than one. I got introduced and passionately
involved with AID, which also led me to meet my wife, Rupa. My interest in
community development and social issues was borne out of the strong influences
of my mother, school teachers and through watching movies with a social message
in my formative years. I have always been inspired by the words of Mahatma
Gandhi - "Be the change you want to see in the world". "

"Hi, I am a post-doc working in cell signaling. I was looking for
something which would add more depth to my life and to be quite honest I am
still looking for it. But in the meantime, working as a volunteer for an
organization like AID gives me a worthwhile cause to be part of. I would love to
work at the grass root level in India, but whilst I am here, let me make the
best of the opportunity. "
Usha
AID Duke Secretary
"Hi, I am an IT professional working here in RTP area. I
always wanted to contribute something towards India and AID provided me with
that opportunity. It's a great place to make a little difference in your own
way.."

I am a first year PhD student at Duke University in the
Computational Biology and Bioinformatics program. My home town is Noida, in
Uttar Pradesh. My hobbies include watching movies, dancing,
exploring new places. Being part of AID has been a great experience so far. Not
only I got to meet a lot of great people, but also realized that you can keep
things simple and still be a part of an initiative to make a difference. You
don’t need that much time and effort. J My interests mainly lie in taking up
projects which help to conserve and sustain our natural resources and the
environment
