AID Nite at Duke
The Annual General Body Meeting for AID - Duke was held at
LSRC Dining Hall, Duke University on Feb 26, 2006. In addition
to presentation about AID, and our report for years 2004-2006, we
had an evening of entertainment and games. The evening was made
absolutely delightful by the musical talent of Nilesh, Anuj and
Partha, who alternated between playing the guitar, keyboards,
ghattam, flute, moorsing, and mouth organ, and sang evergreen
Hindi oldies and the most happening recent film music. We had
audience members who sang to karaoke as well.
In addition, there was a raffle and tambola, with prizes of
calendars, t-shirts, articles of Indian handmade paper, and 2 bumper
prizes of dinner for two at Spice and Curry restaurant. Dinner was
generously donated by Tower Indian restaurant, and the venue was
made possible due to Duke-OSAF. The audio system was sponsored by
GPSC. So you can see, that when it is a good cause, there is no end
to goodwill! All funds raised will go towards supporting development
projects in India.
Spring Fest and Oktober Fest at Duke
The annual fall outdoor festival - Oktober Fest -
is held on the West campus at Duke Chapel Quad and offers a relaxing
day of entertainment amid an environment of fine crafts, artworks
and cuisine. In the event of rain, the festival is held in the Bryan
Student Center.
The Duke University Union Special Events
Committee and the International Association present
Springternational. This annual festival is held on Duke University's
Chapel Quadrangle on main campus and offers a fun-filled, relaxing
day of outdoor entertainment and fine international crafts, artwork
and cuisine.
AID-Duke has a food stall during both of these festivals. The food is catered by a local Indian restaurant.
The profit from these food stalls are a steady source of funds for
the chapter each year. Many students and employees volunteer to
serve food at the stall. The volunteers (some of them are
first-timers) get to learn the work done by AID both at Duke and in
other chapters. We also place a banner and some AID posters near the
food stall. This helps in making the Duke community aware of our
presence and gives them an opportunity to know what we do.

AID Cricket Cup - Cricket for a Cause
AID - Duke, sometimes partnering with other
local chapters or student groups hosts the
AID Cricket Cup - Cricket for a Cause every Fall. This is an 8 a
side tennis ball cricket tournament, an entire day of non-stop
cricket, camaraderie, competition, food and fun. All proceeds from
the day's events go towards the AID-Duke fund for supporting
projects in India.
In 2005, 16 teams, one of which came from as far as
Charlottesville, VA, battled it out for the trophy at the West Astro
Turf fields of Duke University, with the final match played under
floodlights. 2 additional kids' teams also participated in this
event.
This tournament is made possible because of the
generosity of many local businesses who sponsor the event, t-shirts,
certificates and banners. A team of dedicated volunteers chip in for registrations, umpiring, scoring and selling
refreshments throughout the day.
AID Cricket Cup is an annual event, so make sure
that you sign up for next fall!
