Major and Minor

Major in Chinese

A major in AMES with a concentration in Chinese requires ten courses which should be distributed as follows:

The language curriculum in the Chinese program is divided into two tracks. For details, please visit the program overview

Students who start with Chinese at the 100 level can opt to take three language courses (e.g. CHN 125-126-135/181 for regular track or CHN 135-136-183 for alternative track) and more literature/culture courses. Alternately, students can take more than four language courses (e.g. CHN 63-64, 125-126, and 181) and fewer literature/culture courses.

Students who go to the Duke Study in China program please see the last section of this webpage for additional information. The equivalence of course numbers between the curriculum abroad and that of the Duke campus is explained on the Duke Global Education website

Minor in Chinese

Minor in Chinese is available in two tracks: the language track and the literature track. Five courses are required in each track. A minor in the language track requires 3-4 language courses, two of which must be at the 100 level, and 1-2 literature/culture courses.  A minor in the literature track requires 2 language courses above the elementary level, 1-2 Chinese literature/culture courses and 1-2 other AMES literature/culture courses.
