Major in Modern Hebrew
A major in AMES with concentration in Modern Hebrew requires ten courses: eight courses in Hebrew and Israeli culture and literature, one departmental introductory course and one AMES course in literature or culture of another language. Eight courses in Hebrew should include a minimum of three language courses of which two must be at the 100 level and a minimum of three literature and culture courses of which two must be taken within the AMES.
Suggested curriculum for students who should take intermediate level Hebrew:

Students who start with Hebrew at the 100 level can opt to take three language courses (e.g. Hebrew 125-126-183 or Hebrew 126-183-184) and five literature/culture courses:
To earn the minor in Hebrew, students must complete five courses in the Department of Asian & Middle Eastern Studies fulfilling the following requirements:
Within the area of concentration
Language
Four courses must be taken in Hebrew language above the Hebrew 002 level. This would include any course with the HEB designation above the 002 level.
Literature and culture
One course must be taken in Hebrew literature or Israeli culture taught in English. Currently, four courses fulfill this requirement:
Requirements for the minor may be fulfilled by study abroad credit. For information on study abroad and whether specific courses may be applied to the Hebrew minor, please contact the department.
For students studying Hebrew but who do not plan to complete the minor, Duke University also offers a certificate in Judaic Studies. Consult the Bulletin for specific requirements.
