India Study Abroad Program will resume Summer 2007 (May 22-July 3) with class sessions in Bombay, Pune, Delhi, Agra and Udaipur (Rajasthan). The program will consist of two full credit courses: AALL 138 The Media in Modern India and AALL 139 Gender and Expressive Culture in India. AALL 138 - The influence of modern media on Indian Society. Comparative study of the role of media in other South Asian cultures. Topics include: traditional sources of new knowledge; the role of printe media during colonization and in the postcolonial period; the emergence of radio; contemporary use of film and television. AALL 139 - This course is an examination of how society constructs and expresses gender in different South Asian contexts. It focuses on the dynamic relationship between dominant representations on men and women and their self-representations. Through textual and contextual forms of analysis, this course investigates socio-cultural factors that shape gender in South Asia. It pays special attention to gender in South Asia's sacred, secular, public and private speheres and their manifestation in literary and expressive cultural forms. Instructor: Premlata Vaishnava
