Guidelines for Self-Placement in Language Courses
How to Use the Self-Placement Guidelines
Welcome to the Korean Language Program! This guideline is to
help you identify a course which will optimize your experience and
success in learning Korean. Your self-placement decision is subject to
the instructor’s approval, and to avoid confusion in the first week of
class, students with prior knowledge of Korean are strongly recommended
to contact the coordinator (Hae-Young Kim), before
enrolling. Please select the sentence below that best describes your
experience in Korean, and continue with the choices found therein.
1. I have never studied or been exposed to Korean.
2. My parents speak to me in Korean.
3. I speak Korean with my parents.
4. I was born in Korea and came to the U.S. after the age
of 6.
5. I attended secondary school in Korea.

| 2. My parents speak to me in Korean. | Sometimes
they do, but I hardly understand them. → Enroll in KOR 001 I understand them, but cannot speak well. I learned Hangul. → Enroll in KOR 002 |
| 3. I speak Korean with my parents. | I can
communicate about basic things in Korean with some effort, and learned
how to read Korean. → Enroll in KOR 063 I can speak everyday Korean fairly fluently, and am able to read and write Korean. → Enroll in KOR 064 |
