Lesson 2: Healthy Living Habits

Overview
The purpose of this lesson is to encourage the development of pratices and attitudes that will help children live healthy lives. They will learn about good nutrition, personal cleanliness, exercise, feelings, and the harmful effects of drugs.

Poster
If using the poster, show how the hampsters in the posters are staying fit.

Objectives (What the kids should know after the lesson)
1. Give examples of the foods that are healthy for them to eat.
2. Give examples of ways to be physically active.
3. Explain the usefulness of rest and relaxation.
4. Describe the impact of feelings.
5. Describe ways to stay clean and healthy.
6. Talk about how drugs can affect children.

Healthy Eating
In this lesson, children will learn what foods that they should eat and about the six food groups.
I. Food groups

A. Sweets and fats (only eat marginally)
B. Fruits (2 servings - serving is the amount you eat at a normal meal)
C. Proteins (2 servings)
D. Dairy Products (3 servings)
E. Vegetables (3 servings)
F. Grains (6 servings)

II. It is important to eat at the right times so that kids can stay healthy.

Physical Activity and Fitness
I. Physical Activity

A. There are many different types of physical activity, but each one will keep you healthy.

1. Light exercise - walking
2. Moderate exercise - playing games
3. Vigorous exercise - playing sports, skating

B. Makes you feel good inside, and gives you energy.
C. If using the poster, refer to it here.
D. Do an activity to emphasize some fun exercise. (Ex. "Hokey Pokey")


Resting and Relaxing Are Fun to Do
I. There are many different ways to rest and relax.

A. Discuss different ways to relax
B. Emphasize that relaxing is always pleasant, and it is good time to use your imagination.

II. Resting prevents the body from getting tired and grumpy

How Do You Feel?
I. This part of the lesson will emphasize feelings and how they are important.
II. Feelings can be recognized in their face, the tone of one's voice, and how someone stands or moves.

A. Understanding feelings can help you understand how others might feel.
B. The way we feel affects how our bodies work.
C. When we feel good, we get along with others better.

III. How can one be nice to oneself?

A. Choose to think happy thoughts.
B. Treat others the way you would like to be treated.
C. Imagine yourself doing good things.

IV. How can you be nice to others?

A. Say sorry when you hurt someone's feelings
B. Play cooperatively and share
C. When you are angry, take time to calm yourself.

The Clean Scene
Keeping your body clean helps to avoid the spread of germs, which are tiny things that can spread sickness to yourself and others. Many of you have experienced some sickness because of germs, like the flu and a cold.

I. Ways to keep your body and environment clean.

A. Clean yourself by showering or taking a bath once daily.
B. Always wash your hands after eating and using a bathroom.
C. Brush your teeth at least twice a day, and clean your room once a week.

II. Avoiding the spread of germs

A. Cover your mouth and nose when you sneeze, cough, or blow your nose
B. Throw away any used tissues in a trash can.
C. Be very careful when sharing a comb, cup, glass, or bottle. If possible, do not share these things at all.
D. Eat with your own utensils.

III. Habits to make you feel better about yourself

A. Wearing clean clothes and keeping your face and teeth clean.
B. Keeping your room clean.

Drugs: How They Can Affect You?
A drug is something that can change the way you think and act. There are many drugs, some of them legal (caffeine), and illegal (crack, cocaine, acid). Many drugs can be addictive, and can affect the body adversely.

I. Some examples of drugs

A. Nicotine (legal for 18 and over) - found in tobacco products. Very addictive. Can affect growth in young people, and cause cancer if used for a long time.
B. Caffeine (legal for all ages) - found in tea, coffee, and soda. Can make someone very hyper.
C. Alcohol (legal for 21 and over) - found in beer, wine, and some other drinks. Even found in some medicanes in small doses. Can affect the way people move and act.
D. Marijuana and cocaine (illegial for all ages) - can affect the mind's ability to think correctly. Also, can have very negative impact on the body.

II. Medicines are drugs that are helpful when one is sick.
