Lesson 3: Careful Kids

Overview
This lesson's purpose is to introduce ways that kids can be safe and careful in various situations. They will learn what to do if one of them gets lost, and if someone is abusing them.

Poster
If using the lesson three poster, introduce the kids to the animals in the poster, and what they do to stay safe.

Educational Objectives
1. Explain who a stranger is and know ways to stay safe
2. Describe ways to stay safe when home alone.
3. Explain abuse and what to do if abused.
4. Explain what to do to avoid becoming lost, and what to do if you are lost.

Staying Stranger Safe
Strangers are people that one does not know at all. Some maybe very good people, but you should never take a chance. Your safety is the most important.

I. Things to do to be safe around strangers

A. Walk with confidence - always walk with a sense of power and purpose
B. Yell for help - you should yell if a stranger makes you feel uncomfortable
C. Don't talk to strangers - this may seem very rude, but if you don't know someone, the best thing to do is to ignore them.
D. Run away- if a stranger asks you to come with him/her, run away.

II. Tricks used by strangers

A. Stranger asks for directions - yell the directions from a safe distance
B. Asking for help- normally adults asks other adults for help, not children
C. Bribing - don't take the bribe and run away
D. Family emergency- never trust the stranger in this situation.

III. Identifying the stranger is very important.

Staying Safe when Home Alone

I. Being home alone means being at home whenever an adult is not present at the home.

II. How to stay safe when home alone?

A. Keep your key - don't let anyone else have the key.
B. Know whom to call - very important if anything goes wrong.
C. The rules of the house - obey all the parents' rules.
D. Danger signs

1. If you are outside and something isn't looking right, do not enter the house and call a parent.
2. Do not open the door if a stranger knocks at the door.
3. Follow rules for answering the phone when you are home alone.

III. Do an activity that allows kids to remember what to do when home alone.

Abuse Is Harm to You (Be very careful when introducing this to children)
No one has the right to do stuff to you that makes you feel uncomfortable, although your parents punishing you for doing something wrong does not fit in this criteria.

I. Ways of possible abuse

A. Being hurt very badly - not the same as being spanked by a parent.
B. Being forced to touch someone on he/she private areas, or someone touching your private areas without permission.
C. If someone doesn't give you food when you are hungry, or refuse to help you when you are sick, they are abusing you.
D. If someone makes you feel bad and you didn't do anything wrong.

II. When being abused, tell a trusted adult.

Lost and Found

I. If you get lost, you may feel scared, lonely, and/or hungry. This is a natural reaction of the body, and it occurs in people no matter what the age.

II. Ways to avoid getting lost

A. Ask permission from a parent or sitter if you go somewhere. They should know where you are going, what time you will be back, and the phone number of where you will be.
B. Never go somewhere alone
C. Memorize your own name, your parent's names, your home address and phone #.
D. Always carry your parent's number at work and the emergency number.
E. Always have enough change to make a call from a pay phone.
F. Pay attention to where you are going. Notice landmarks and unusual things.
G. Ask for directions when you are lost and know whom to ask.
H. Go directly to a police officer or a store employee if lost in a public place.

III. Always have a plan ready in case you get lost.

IV. Things to do if you are in the woods

A. Wear bright clothes
B. Have the proper gear with you - food, flashlight, and a poncho if it rains

V. What to do if you are lost

A. Stay in a place that is highly visible.
B. Do not imagine scary things
C. Always try to stay warm.

VI. Have kids know their full name, address, phone number, and parent's names.

Summary Scenario Activity
Summarize everything that you learned in this lesson briefly. If using the poster, it can be a very helpful tool in summarizing all the aspects of this lesson.
