Lesson 5: Road Safety

Overview:
Motor vehicles are the leading cause of deaths and injury for children of all ages! These accidents involve Pedestrians and Cyclists as well as people in cars. Ideas of how to prevent these accidents will be presented in this lesson.

Objectives:
1. Demonstrate how to properly use safety belts and in cars
2. Explain safety rules for riding a bike, etc.
3. Demonstrate the proper way to cross a street
4. Describe what to do while waiting for, entering riding, and leaving a school bus

Car Safety:

1. What is the first thing you should do when you get into a motor vehicle?

a. Put on your seatbelt
b. If you don't out on the safety belt and you get in a car accident, you are more likely to get injured or even killed
c. If you are over 40 pounds and 40 inches tall, you can put on a shoulder belt in addition to the lap belt. The shoulder strap goes across the chest and shoulder, not the neck!
d. Demonstrate how you put a seatbelt on correctly.

2. Go over wive's tales about how it is ok to not wear them and refute these.

a. Ex. You don't need them on a short trip: Most accidents happen very close to home!

3. * Egg demonstration showing how the egg gets cracked when it is not protected by a safety belt.

Bike Safety:

1. When riding a bike you need to follow all of the traffic signs and signals on the road.
2. Make sure your bike is the right size for you
3. Wear protective clothing and easy to ride in clothes which will not get caught in the bike

a. Wear a helmet at all times when riding a bike
b. Knee pads
c. Sturdy shoes
d. Light or bright colored clothes so the driver can see you.

4. Know the Rules of the Road and follow them!

a. Go over local rules for bike riders
b. Ride in the same direction as motor traffic
c. If you need to cross a busy street, go to the crosswalk and get off your bike and walk it across.

5. Don't Ride in Unsafe Conditions

a. Find a safe route in your neighborhood
b. Don't ride on icy roads or slippery surfaces
c. Don't ride in the dark
d. Use bike lanes and sidewalks whenever possible
e. Be prepared to stop suddenly if needed

Walking Safely

1. Ask: "Where are you allowed to walk by yourself? What do you do when you are walking near traffic or crossing a busy street?
2. Road Smart ideas to Remember

a. Always stop at the curve or curb before you cross a street
b. Listen, the look left, then right, then left again for cars before you cross
c. Don't cross between parked cars
d. Keep looking for cars until you have reached the other side

3. Go over what the traffic signals mean

a. Green- It is ok to cross, but still look both ways and be careful
b. Flashing Don't Walk- if you are in the middle of the street keep going quickly, but if you are at the curb don't cross.

4. In a parking lot remember to follow the same rules as for crossing the street.

School Bus Safety:

1. While waiting for the bus…

a. Wait as far from the curb or street as possible
b. Don't play games in the street
c. Carry your supplies in a bookbag
d. Do not go in front of the bus or reach under the bus to recover something you dropped, ask for help
e. Wait for the bus to come to a complete stop before you move towards it
f. Enter the bus one at a time

2. When riding the bus…

a. Listen to the Bus Driver and follow his/her instructions
b. Use safety belts if they have them
c. Keep your voice low and your hands to yourself
d. Sit down when the bus is moving
e. Keep your hands and arms inside the bus
f. Don't block the aisles

3. When getting off the bus…

a. Move immediately to the sidewalk away from the bus
b. If you need to cross the street wait for the bus driver to signal you to do so!
