Poster:
Poster for Lesson 6 reinforces ideas with a story the kids can relate to!

Objectives:
1. Explain what a resource is
2. Explain why polluting the environment in unhealthy
3. Tell how to Refuse, Reuse, Recycle and Respect
4. List ways to save water and energy
5. Explain why some animals and plants become endangered or extinct and how to help them survive

Key Words:
Endangered
Environment

Resource

Protecting the Environment:

1. Ask: What is the environment? What does it give us?

a. The environment is everything around us and we need it to survive!

2. We get things from the environment that we need to survive; these are called resources.

a. Examples:
i. Oil, coal, natural gas
ii. Soil for growing plants
iii. Rivers, lakes, oceans
iv. Air to breathe

3. Hurting the Environment

a. Pollution- when people put garbage and other harmful things into our resources, it hurts them and this is called pollution.
i. Examples
1. Litter
2. Dumping garbage in the ocean
b. Pollution limits the availability of resources for the future generations
i. Celery experiment demonstrating Pollution
1. The Four R's
a. Refuse- to buy things which cannot recycle
b. Reuse- Paper and boxes can be reused so that you do not waste them
c. Recycle- Recycle aluminum, paper, plastic, etc.
i. Recycling allows you to make new things from the material of the old things
d. RESPECT- it is very important that you respect the environment and everything that it consists of, resources, animals, etc.

Saving Energy and Precious Resources:

1. Conserving Water

a. Don't let the water run when you are brushing teeth or doing the dishes
b. Take Quick Showers
c. Don't dump things in water because it pollutes it
d. Facts about water waste
i. Running the water when you brush your teeth wastes up to five gallons of water
ii. A tiny leak in a faucet can waste up to 3,000 gallons of water in a year
iii. You use five gallons of water every minute you are in the shower.

2. Injuries to the Air

a. We all need to be able to breathe clean air in order to stay alive.
b. What things can pollute the air
i. Cars, trucks, etc
ii. Factories that release gas into the air
iii. Fires or factories that release smoke
c. Ways to help clean up the air
i. Walk or ride a bike short distances
ii. Conserve and recycle paper
iii. Plant trees, bushes etc

3. Energy

a. Do you know how electricity is made?
i. Fuels-coal, oil
b. What are some things you can do to save energy?
i. Turn the lights and TV, radio or other appliances off when you don't use them
ii. Keep temp setting in your home even, not too hot, not too cold

a. An animal who is endangered of becoming extinct, or whose species may disappear.

3. What are some endangered species?

a. Jaguars
b. Pandas
c. Gorillas

ii. Others are killed for their fur coats
iii. Others are killed for food
c. We all Depend on Each Other:1. It is important to emphasize to the children that we all depend on each other and are interdependent. All animals need to eat, plants need sunlight, and we need air to breath. Without the animals and the plants, humans would have difficulty surviving in the world
